HOW TO: CWENC and SONAR 4

Well, I've seen it said before it doesnt work, but it does..thought I'd share how I made it work...

first

tools/cakewalk ext coder config

friendly name (give it a name, i called mine freemp3)

path (the path to cwenc) mine is
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\

command line: (i use this)
cwenc.exe -h %I %O

save it

now we export

file->export audio

file name (what you want to call it, i called is carlblack for this example)
file type (friendly name we gave cwenc in the previous steps, i called it "freemp3" up above)

bounce settings (use whatever floats your boat here)

click export

Mixing down audio....wait......

cwenc window pops up

click select on input file
( now my cakewalk stuff is setup defaults (ymmv)
but this is what I do next)

browse to C:\Cakewalk Projects\[your project folder name]\Audio and look for the name you gave the file in the expoart name up above it shold look something like this:

carlblack.mp3.TMP.WAV (carlblack being the name I gave it in this case up above)

so you select that file as the input file

now click output file
select save as type as (Audio Files *.mp3 *.ogg)

give it a name in the file name box
click save

click all the options you want in the cwenc window...

click OK

encoding....wait....

(then you'll get an error/warning about the encoder not returning soemthing, click OK on that)

Browse to folder where you said you wanted the MP3.

MP3 created!

Works everytime here.

after the camewalk ext coder config is setup you can skip that step from now on and just go to the file->export audio and follow the steps from there.

    cwenc.exe -h %I %O

I had the wrong command line up above in that step.... even better use this in that step

    cwenc /i:%I /o:%O

that's the lower and upper case letters I and O (not zeros)

make sure you click "save" after you input that.

now when the cwenc window pops open, it will have the input and output fields already populated! it will save the mp3 in the directory you selected during the export audio portion up above in first post.

(still gives a warning about the decodeer tho, just click ok on that)

To add on to your reply Zep,

I actually got CWENC to work with Sonar by using the path pointing to Lame's encoder which I believe is installed by CWENC. I used Craig Anderton's instructions and tweaked them a little and got it to work. I don't get any errors or anything. Just named it "Lame MP3 High Quality Stereo" and that is what I see in the convert drop-down box.

you are sending it directly to LAME then and not using the CWENC interface to LAME, correct?

I like the CWENC interface to pop up when I click export, that way I can change the options it sends to the lame encoder.

Correct, I bypass the CWENC properties screen. I do like the CWENC options screen but was getting errors and having other problems. I may try it your way just to see if it works better. Either way I think it's better than having to pay for the option to export to mp3.
