HP Pavilion / UA-25 / vista 32 - distorted audio

Hi to all.

I have just bought a brand new HP Pavilion DV5 notebook. Processor is "Turion AMD X2 64," ram is 2gb. I had intended to downgrade to XP, but have since found that XP is very difficult to run on this machine, so I am going to stick with Vista. I use Sonar 7, and Amplitube 2.

The problem is that when I output audio through my UA-25 interface the output is very stuttery and distorted (not subtle but extreme mangling).

One other strange symptom is that Cakewalk seems only to recognise the left channel of the UA-25 which leads me to believe this may be a driver issue.

I have never had an installation problem with the ua-25 in the past.

- I am running the Vista 32 drivers for the UA-25 from the Roland website
- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the UA-25.
- The problem is not software dependent (ie the distortion is the same whether I am using Cakewalk or Itunes).
- I have played with the buffer size to no effect (and in any event this is a new machine and has easily the specs to run audio efficiently).
- I have set Vista to prioritise background processed.
I had the UA-25 set to advanced mode, and 44.1 when I installed.
- The machine is brand new and came with Vista installed.
- I have disabled all non-edirol ua-25 audio drivers.
- Another strange symptom is that when I try to uninstal the driver I get the message "the operating system you are using is not supported" - but the driver I installed was for Vista 32 (note that there (unlike XP).
- I have Disabled in the device manages all audio devices (except the edirol), the dvdr, wireless network, ethernet, webcam - to no avail.
I have checked the BIOS for audio devices (like Azaria) and found none.
- I have tried ASIO4all

Suggestions are very welcome!

Thanks, I have run that tool (which is excellent). I had spikes until I uninstalled my Wireless network connection, then no spikes. However even with the wireless card disabled there is still static / distortion.

Hi i have exactly the same problem you have with your hp i tried every amd based computor in the store to find the problem including hp dv5 the all the ones with a ati video card and realtek sound do the same cracking and popping sound but i found a cure for it but dont think of running software synths because latency goes up a somewhat my computor is an acer aspire 5530
and i tried every thing every tweak even put windows xp on the thing and it did not help at all
but the solution is to plug in a usb hub before the sound card and it will stop the crackling and popping just a simple self powered hub will do but i recommend one with power because the edirol uses 480 ma also dont plug any thing else in the hub at the same time.
I hope this helps you i beat my brains out for a month to figure this out and then i got desperate
and tried it and walla it works.

Hi there. I ended up traking the HP back and getting a Mac. It does appear that there is a chipset issue with these HP machines.

HP's Pavilion dv lineup of multimedia laptops, obtainable in 14-, 15-, and 17-inch versions, are all striking systems aimed at normal consumers with a important diet of videos, music, and added forms of media.

    They're more stylish too!
