HP closing/selling PC division

I just read that HP is closing its tablet and phone division because of declining market share and may sell its PC division as well.  My question is as Apple and Google gain more market share with their OSs and more and more people which to Ipad type devices, will users of Cakewalk, running on Windows soon be obsolete? Apple is now the second largest company in the world. A spot once held by Microsoft

What I am really asking is not if, "users of Cakewalk, running on Windows soon be obsolete," but if Cakewalk software itself will become obsolete if it continues to run on a Window's OS only?

Selling their hardware division is a rumor. They make all of their money selling desktops and servers. I think more likely, they saw Windows 8 on a tablet and saw the writing on the wall.

12th largest revenue growth among top companies, but doesn't figure in the top 50 as far as profit growth goes.

Sounds like they need to work on their margins.  They are selling too cheaply.

if HP sells it's computer division what does it have left?  Agilent and HP split several years ago, so that they (HP) could concentrate on computers while Agilent would remove the burden of sales/manufacturing and support of test equipment.  so what does HP have left except computers?

My opinion on this is that after a long period of increasing convergence between the markets for consumer and professional computer hardware, those markets are now starting to diverge again.

I've got an iPad, and I have to say, for the mainstream computer usage activities of web browsing / email / youtube / shopping, it is so absolutely superior to a desktop or laptop as to make those things seem laughably unwieldy. Like mowing the lawn with a Sherman tank.

It's also, with the keyboard add on, pretty good for bread and butter word processor / spreadsheet type work.

What it's no use at all for, and I think never will be (because of the form factor, processing power is not the defining thing here) is subtantial work of the type we saw in DAWs, or video NLEs, and lots of other activities.

So I think the mass market is going to move over to tablets in a big way, and I think the paradigm is going to be all about ease of use.

At the other end, I think the pro "serious" computer can and will get better and better, but the changing market structures probably mean it's going to get a bit more expensive to have a bleeding edge system.

Microsoft Windows is actually best placed to own this pro computing market, though whether Microsoft have got the sense to realise that remains an open question. What I've seen so far of the Windows 8 tablet interface absolutely screams "not getting it". All the restrictions of a tablet, with all the techy complexity of a desktop; worst of both worlds.

Apple is the top in terms of value to investors not the top company or largest. it depends on how one measures size and worth.

As for MS or Windows. Apple is into ipods ipads and iphones it is still way behind MS for software or OSs for computers. It will be for a long time to come. It still only has a fraction of the computer market of installed OSs.  Don't forget MS bailed them out of bankruptcy a while back.

If Jobs goes MS will no doubt have to bail them out again.

I doubt that. I think that's an outdated view. Apple are doing very, very well, and it's clearly not a fluke.

The more pertinient point is the direction Apple are heading in. The latest iteration of OSX has started to skew it in the direction of iOS, and it's notable that they've dropped the word "Mac" from the OS name. "Mac" is now just the range of hardware.

I think Apple are likely aiming to unify their user experience across devices and pich for the mainstream. There's also a rumour that they are intending to phase out having any kind of tower case model, so the form factors will broadly be iPhone, iPad and iMac.

Here's a good summary of the PC division sell-off and more importantly to the future HP business model, the purchase of Autonomy and HPs IBM-like focus across software services.

iPhones, iPads and computers seem to be considered as different access points to your data in different situations, so it makes sense to streamline the OS all across. And if you use an iPhone or an iPad, at some point, it may seem like the easiest option to just use a Mac as your main computer too - for every day use, keeping a machine that doesn't play well with the others isn't necessarily advantageous.

Somehow, the actual device that you use has to be transparent and simplify the way you interact w/ your stuff - one profile, one set of preferences, one set of apps, all accessible from all of your devices.

Of course, in certain cases, like for music production, having a dedicated computer remains a necessity, but the "satellites" principle still works.

hardly... HP is a massive company. consumer/workstation PCs are far from their main thing.

now real servers and software/support etc for same are where thier strength is. same as IBM you dont see IBM computers anymore yet they have a large share of the server market.

its a pretty smart move really and the OP s question is not too far off base.
the move to cloud based OS are just around the corner.

to add to it HP is the #1 PC seller in the world

Isn’t it about supply and demand? Remember the days when a MAC was the PC of choice and if you wanted a pro recording, you used a Mac with Protools? Some would say that this is still the best set up (I think Cakewalk on Windows is best for me). Then the pendulum/market shifted and Microsoft OS now dominates the market because PCs running windows were/are more affordable than Macs. Is the pendulum swinging back to Apple and to Google (Android)? Let face it, just about all you see these days are apps for IPads, and other tablets and smart phones with either Apple’s OS or Google’s Android.  Let’s not forget that all this has taken place within the last 20 years. Will those of us using PCs running a Windows OS end up like current Apple users and find it difficult to find software that runs on Windows? Will Cakewalk be able to adapt to the change PC market?

I know it’s just HP but is it a sign of the times for the PC running Windows? I just hope Cakewalk isn’t caught behind the 8 ball.  Remember Arp synthesizers; Ensoniq samplers; and Commodore 64 computers? Remember it used to be Kmart and Sears and no one had heard of Walmart.

The real question (IMO) is, how will this affect me? Will it affect Sonar of the future of Windows based desktops and laptops? Really, we (as DAW users) are sort of like a gnat on an elephant compared to the mass of computer/pad/internet users. I hope we will continue to be able to hitch a ride on the digital advances. It is a little unnerving to to me to see HP buckle under market pressure from Apple. I also read hints that Apple is moving to drop the desktop Mac and just offer the i-Mac, i-Pad. and i-Phone type products. That could be good or bad. It may give the desktop PC a little elbow room, or it could mean that the market wont continue to support development of the desktop PC and could make it become more expensive again...
They were the best of times, they were the worst of times...

So... I wonder how this will affect us. At least we have what we have and I surely understand that business is going to follow the market demand which is not the producer but is the listener/watcher/searcher/.

Maybe I am overthinking it, after all it isn't Intel or AMD that is spinning off their mircochip business... HP just assembles parts and writes some software as far as I know.. so maybe it all means nothing. Maybe it is someone making a poor decision and someone else is seeing a huge opportunity... isn't that how the free market works? I imagine Lenovo is working 48 hours a day right now trying to position themselves to buy HPs puter business. I think I read something about Microsoft being interested, I mike like to see that... though they would probably be immediately sued by every other PC MFG....

OK, not freaking out anymore... meds taking effect... breathe... in, out, in, out... ;~) J/K

LOL I just heard about this too. I guess they are selling off their Tablets, Netbooks, Laptops Basically computer Hardware, Then they are selling of another section (The Hardware is first to be amputated).
From what was said on the news and I read online is they are working theor way 100% out of the consumer Market, Which at first I assumed that meant no more dealing with personal Hardware but would still be in the Business/Industrial sector but I now believe they are basically closing up shop ( as far as the HP most of us know about. I had a DV-7 1285DX Nice Laptop but It started having Spazzz attacks and then one morn RIP.
ASUS G73SW was what Best Buy said my Insurance coverage on the HP allowed me to get
(ASUS is at Min. 5X the Machine the HP was and I bet in some cases 10X the machine.

First - the old cliché of application more difficult to find on Mac doesn't really hold much water these days. There are tons of developers, plenty of application to do just about anything you'd do on the PC, free stuff and all. What might be missing is stuff like synthedit-made VST synths... And I personally couldn't care less.

Second, I don't think Windows PC are going to vanish anytime soon. But whereas with Mac there is one company leading the way/dictating, on the PC, there's no one in charge - Windows is usually the adopted OS (though there are alternatives), and that's pretty much the only glue that will hold all the pieces together.

And the previews of Windows 8 tend to demonstrate that Microsoft is perfectly aware that there is a huge market for à la Apple environment. Many folks want something that just works, and that's Apple's credo (justified or not).

I think that overall, as anti-Apple as many folks can be, in the end, many want exactly what Apple offers but they refuse to buy it from Apple. To me, Windows 8 is a clear demonstration of that.

Whenever I read someone comparing XP and 7,  all the arguments in favor of 7 they use are the exact same ones which Mac users have been using for years. In that sense, all that MS has to do is to keep on following Apple and they'll always have a market.

EDIT - Just to be clear, I don't think Apple is all that innovative - but they are good at catching the next big thing, incorporating it and marketing it. They're not inventors, but trend setters.

Good move for HP to cut their losses now since Windows 8 will work both on PCs and tablets.
There's also rumors of MS coming out with their own hardware tablets. No room left for WebOS.

    No wonder.

"The hardware reportedly stopped the team from innovating beyond certain points because it was slow and imposed constraints, which was highlighted when webOS was loaded on to Apple’s iPad device and found to run the platform significantly faster than the device for which it was originally developed."

iPad2 runs webOS twice as fast as the TouchPad

if HP sells it's computer division what does it have left?

They make most of their money off technology services.

The network news reported that 1/3 of their business is PC sales.

Guys, HP has just "spun" off this department, not sold it. They have removed the PC division from the HP stock symbol and created a new symbol for it (don't know what that symbol is yet). They will still make PCs and they will still be HPs.

HP computers suck so they may close it or sell it, nobody gives a damn anymore.
Since years they are on last position on every reliability ranking list.
