It's a programming error. If you can reproduce it, report it to Cakewalk.

Or it could be that your PC has become unstable. The Registry is the main culprit if you've been installing/uninstalling lots of programs. When last you had your Registry cleanse or for that matter, did a fresh re-install of XP. I normally do a fresh re-install of the operating system once a year.

I experience the same problem when double clicking on a project file to open it. When opening the file from within SHS, the problem does not occur.

you're probably right, i've never cleaned the registry and have in/unstalled plenty of programs. esp. lately trying out a bunch of plugins.

i don't even know how to go about cleaning the registry. care to advise me on that? is there a good piece of software for that? googling...

well, go figure. mine was crashing whether i opened it from within or without. i deleted the file, started a new one with envelopes and this one hasn't caused a crash, yet. ?????? it must be my computer...the registry or whatever.

Here's a simple and free one I use - RegCleaner
There's also System Restore if you install a program and afterwards your PC becomes unstable.
The ultimate system cleaner is a hard drive reformat and a fresh re-install of XP. It's a hassle, but sometimes necessary. Before I began working in SHS4 that is what I did. So I had a fresh start.

Usually crashes are due to the device drivers. Make sure you have the latest driver for your soundcard. Check the Windows-Control Panel-System-Device Manager and make sure all of the devices are functioning properly. Also, check the Start-Administrative Tools-Event Viewer and see if you the system or application log has any errors in it.
