Haas effect and loudmouth dolts on Reddit
So I'm getting into a war of words of sorts with some infernal loud mouthed douchenozzle on Reddit who is claiming that the Haas effect in production has nothing to do with panning and that the delay is all you need to create the effect, even if both signals are panned dead center. He also claims that the delay time should be calculated as a fraction of the sample rate of the project. Now this just all seems so laughable to me, and he keeps posting quotes from articles which clearly state that the delayed signal must come from a different location to the original for the effect to work. So clearly he's off his noggin to some degree, and I'm also baffled by this whole sample rate thing. Of what relevance is the sample rate of the audio to the required delay time? As well as reeling off these bizarre theories, he's also insisting that he's a seasoned audio pro, an expert of sorts, and gets paid for it.
Am I just misunderstanding what he's trying to say - is there ANY point engaging him any further?

Spatial perception is very complicated. Just sayin....
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

You must engage him. Either: - Tell him to try it both his way and the proper way
or - Explain to him that in your humble opinion, he is a massive twat
Simples (or should that be "samples"... yuk yuk)

I've done both and they bounced right off him. Didn't even leave a mark.

Sorry to hear about your douchenozzle problem. Online dating is at least as complicated as the old fashioned bar pickup method, except that you can be less certain that your target has been drinking online. From your description it is difficult to say whether DN is inebriated or just plain stupid, but it probably matters less than you might think. Disagreements are just as likely in online relationships as in bars, but at least if he vomits while you are arguing, you will not feel obligated to hold his head over a toilet. In any case, it is hard to see why you want to save this relationship. You obviously do not respect the douche, and a relationship between two people who disagree on such an important life goal as how to implement the Haas effect is unlikely to improve unless one of you is willing to compromise. I would just tell him that you do not think things will work out, and move on to another potential mate. Bringing him here to humiliate him in front of your friends just makes you look petty.

So, let me see if I've got this. You attempted to conduct a logical, informed and intelligent discussion with a fool and he responded in an illogical manner? There's a difference between ignorance and intentional stupidity. One is due to a lack of knowledge and experience and the other is due to self-centered arrogance. Willful stupidity thrives on attention, even the negative variety. You can't fix stupid, but you can starve it. Ignore it long enough, and it will wander into the street where it will encounter natural consequences. I'm sure your concern is not for educating this person, but is instead for setting the record straight for those he might confuse. I think all you can do is state the facts, drop the mic, and walk off stage.

We used to have two responses to trolls. One was to actually agree with them and say "It's exactly the same theory as [insert even more ridiculously stupid theory here]!" The other response was pretty funny. All of us in one musician forum have "Bert" names (yes, I'm Craigbert there). When someone would complain that a troll was stomping all over another forum we would "Send in the Berts!" and all join just to mock, harass and, eventually, cause the troll to shut up or leave. Hehe... I must admit it was fun!
