Half off Sonar X1 upgrades - would you upgrade if this was their next big promotion?
Well it's been 8 months since X1's release and we've seen several promotions but nothing that really attracted a lot of Sonar 8.5 and previous version users. They've been pushing the FREE Welcome Kit for quite some time and I am sure it has only generated some interest but a bigger and better promotion would be half off at this point in time a long with that Welcome Kit. What do you guys and gals think?

Where are you getting your facts from? I am an 8.5.3 user that upgraded early on. Judging from CW's words X1 has been a resounding success in number of units shipped.

Just making referencing to the promotions and not the overall sales of X1. I was pointing out that the current promotion has been running for some time and at this point in time it would be good to have a bigger and better promotion to get more users of 8.5 and prior to upgrade. I am sure X1 sales has to be their best over past versions since it has generated more interest. But just because they may have sold more volumes doesn't mean they should stop pushing sales.

I must admit, that having bought it, my interest in Cakewalks promotion is negligible unless I am looking for an update or a bug fix. If you go on the Sonar website, the first thing glaring at you is X1. Well it was last time I visited it. Why the concern? Are you a share holder?

I was lucky enough to get in on the buy 8.5 and get X1 free deal. I used 8.5 for about 2 months before the X1 download became available. I much prefer the 8.5 gui to X1, but, I have the suspicion that 8.5 will be the last we see of that gui and workflow. Over a period of time 8.5 will become a fond memory to all of us as X1 becomes the new standard. I hope I am wrong because I would like to see the choice put before us. X1 has not been that bad of a battle for me. I downloaded and played with it during off hours in my studio til I got the hang of it. That took about 3 to 4 weeks to learn where they had moved everything and get used to the workflow. I used 8.5 in the meantime for work. I must say, once I used X1 in the first session, I have not gone back to 8.5 since. I still keep it around in case someone comes in with an older project.

What do you guys and gals think? That's not true at all. SONAR X1 has been the most popular upgrade of SONAR ever. I think the best promotion is word of mouth and a lot of customers are very happy with SONAR X1 and the subsequent updates. Additionally, we believe when you add up all the features in SONAR X1, you will see that the value of the product, as it stands, is very good.

Sorry - I can't help but comment on this ... Units "shipped" is not a great barometer in most industries. There's the story about a recording artist (I won't name) whose label "shipped" 600,000 units the first week and bragged about it. Then it was discovered that 400,000 were returned unsold later on. So shipped vs sold are two very different statistics. I doubt CW will reveal their actual sales units (or returned units).

I thought X1 was a half price upgrade. I thought it was going to be $179.00 but somebody, who admittedly knew a lot more about SONAR X1 than I, disagreed and decided it was only worth $99.00. I still don't agree that the SONAR X1 upgrade should be $99.00.... but it is nearly half the price of what we are used to paying. best regards, mike edit spelling

Personally I did not need a BIG promotion to upgrade from Sonar 8.5 to X1. Besides I am not really concerned about sales/upgrade statistics.

I am sure you can find a story to make whatever point you feel like making. I am not trying to play games here with you. In addition, as I mentioned before, there are a lot of happy customers who really enjoy SONAR X1. That has helped tremendously in spreading the word about SONAR X1 and making it a success.

People have been buying their own records for years and then selling them on. Allegedly Simon Cowell is big on that As far as software is concerned, it's hard to return a dowloaded product. Even if you purchase the DVD, I would have thought, getting your money back after installing and register it would be a big ask.

I was merely pointing out that when someone makes a statement about units "shipped" (that wasn't you) that it doesn't really prove/mean anything unless those units are actually sold. I also believe you that X1 is the most popular. You guys did a lot of serious marketing and spending to get people's attention. I'm not being adversarial here, btw. Perhaps you are ;)

In a normal manufacture retail arrangement the shipped items are also sold items. Few ship items on contingency to retailers.

Out in the real world retailers with a good credit rating have 90 day net terms. The goal is to sell through and pay off the tab fast enough to get an early payment incentive discount of a percent or two. If you don't sell through you have to figure out how much it costs to store the stuff. regards, mike

Well, you guys don't plan on giving away the FREE Welcome Kit after September 15th so something else has to be baking as far as a new promotion goes or this may just be the last promotion before the Upgrade to X1 and get the next Paid Update for FREE. But from what I've translated from the Summer of Sonar X1 bulletin is that there's more in store for X1 and that you guys are breaking away from tradition - which implies no upgrade this coming October or December and the focus will still be on the current version. I will upgrade because of this commitment to X1 and not a new version that may or not be out in 1 or 3 months. A X1d then a X1.5 version that's absolutely Free would be a good idea and incentive to those who haven't already upgraded. I prophesied a lot of folks that's been holding out like me would jump on board and not need some half off promotion to get them to upgrade. As much as X1 may offer now, it's the continuing product support, updates, promotions (whether it be word of mouth) and sales that contributes to the products longevity. I encourage you Cakewalkers to stick with what you have and keep on baking to make X1 the go to DAW for a majority of musically inspired people who walk this earth and who love to dj, battle and dance in the digital domain.
