The book this site is associated with, Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior, is really quite good, and he's a well known authority.  So any cheap or free software he recommends is worth your time evaluating.  The book is not as comprehensive or essential as Mixign Audio by Izhaki, but it's a great read nevertheless.

Yeah I have Mixing Audio by Izhak and as you say it is great, I learnt and am still learning so much from it. The good thing with that book and the site link is the audio examples. I like to be able to hear what is being described - that's a big help.

Being a compulsive collector of audio-related books, I of course have Mike Senior's book. It was an enjoyable read, but contrary to the title's promise it does not actually contain any secrets.

I was just a little disappointed, but I should have guessed that $25 for a book of actual secrets was probably too good to be true.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Funny coincidence - I just discovered Stillwell plug-ins last night, which Senior recommends. Not that I need more eq's and compressors, but for such reasonable prices, they may indeed be worth a look...

I also just recently acquired this book..... Mixing Secrets.

As Bit mentioned, it's a good read, I like the level it's written on..... not exactly at a beginners level but not talking theory all the time either. My wife bought me a book about home recording a few years back and it was a very basic beginners level book. I've learned to smile, and say "thank you Dear, you're so thoughtful!" ...and yes I did read it from cover to cover even though I knew just about everything in it already. Back to Mixing Secrets....   Charts and graphs are easy to understand and the humor in it, while not exactly ready for a standup routine, is interesting enough.

Secrets...? No, not really but it's the kind of stuff you need to refresh from time to time as we all tend to drift a bit in the way we do things, and we all forget things,  mainly from laziness (in my case).

Can it save you time and point you in the right direction and get you thinking a bit deeper about all things audio? Definitely!

I'm just about halfway through it and enjoying it.  Is it worth buying...? I'd say so.

The mastering engineer I worked with on our last CD showed us how the Stillwell schOPE plug-in can really help you visually see where the low-end of the bass and kick drum frequencies compete.  This really helps in identifying a "pocket" for both to co-exist in the material.  It was one of the best $25 plugs I recently spent my money on.

Here is a link to that plug (which has a demo) if anyone is interested in trying it: http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=26
