They don't do birthdays now like we did back in the day.

Back when we were kids, we knew how to celebrate birthdays.  You'd get to sleep in, sometimes as late as 3AM!  You'd still get your morning beatings, but your Ma would pull her punches a little.  At breakfast, someone would mention that it was your birthday and your Pa would scowl into his gruel and mutter, "It'll be the last one!  I'll get him for sure this year!"

After several hours of mucking out the hog stalls, you'd sometimes get to wear the shoes to walk to school.  10 miles, straight up, through 15 feet of snow...  If you made it, you were greeted by the Coach and his kids.  They wished you a happy birthday by making sure that both sides of your face were equally bruised.  The teacher would screech just a wee bit quieter in your ear as she screamed at the class.  Sometimes, you could still hear out of that side by lunchtime.

On your Birthday, you didn't have to eat the lunch Ma made and you could get sub-par cold beans 3 months past their expiration date from the lunch lady who would sneeze a little something extra into your food that day.  It was very special.  As the school day wore on (each day lasted about 90 hours due to the fact that we didn't really have time figured out back then), the teacher would still whack you with her ruler, but she didn't break it quite as often.  Most of the time, you hardly even felt the concussion.

When school was out, you'd walk home, 20 miles, straight up, over burning coals and in 15 feet of snow...  You'd get to spend the next several hours carrying rocks out of the fields.  Because it was your birthday, Pa would help motivate you to move faster with the electric cattle prod.  There'd be a brief dinner consisting of meat(?) and leftover gruel.  Ma would pre-chew your meat(?) so you could choke it down while Pa just sharpened his knife, muttering and glaring at you.

After supper, you'd go back out into the field to spend the night up on a pole, working the night shift as a scarecrow.  In between the lightening strikes and the bear attacks, you could get a little sleep.

Those were the days!  Kids today don't know anything about how to celebrate a birthday...

Enjoy your bouncy castle, Steve.

Happy Birthday mate - Gemini then? That makes 2 of us/you. My birthday next week

Gemini ?  My arse !

People who believe that they are somehow similar to others because of the time of the year that they are born are incredibly naive. We Scorpios just would never be taken in that easily.
