Happy Camper Got His 700C.. now a 700R on it's way... sweet.
Just this minute got my new 700C up and running... pretty impressed so far. ...apologies for a new thread, just had to rant for a moment. It looks to be quite impressive. Out.

Thanks Craig.... it's replacing a Mackie MCU but so far I'm impressed with having EQ so available. Got a lot of new habits to learn like every new surface but hopefully this one is the last one. Just gotta find the 700R for a respectable price now... err, and rebuild the desk.

Thanks a bunch folks. Spent a few hours with the new girl last night and thought about her all day today... must mean something. What an excellent surface... just gotta watch some videos now to learn how to do the things you are so used to doing with a mouse and keyboard... mainly editing features. Nice to be in the '700 Club' and thanks again for the kind sentiments.

Congrats to us both Mully! I'm slowly wrapping my head around the 700C, I can already see that its a very well thought out product. I sure that once we're able to remember what all of the buttons do (without using the cheatsheet) we'll be able to do some serious damage... -eB

Hey Mully and eBlue...congrats to you both. I got mine back in June of 2009, got my studio modified to use it (new desk, racks, etc.) and then had to hit the road again to make some bucks (needed to eat and pay for all of this stuff). I've been checking the forum every now and then, but have been soooo busy (long hours). Anyway, back home now and took this week off to upgrade all software and start getting familiar with Sonar 8.5 and the V-700 Studio setup. The more I mess with it the more impressed I am...really nice compared to experiences with other setups I've used. The software and hardware really work well togehter. My only complaint so far is the light-weight monitoring setup; not really up to the pro standards that I have been used to for tracking and over-dubbing, but I'll figure something out. I think I've already seen some discussion on this issue in the not-too-distance past. Anyway, I'm very pleased with everything so far, including Sonar (new platform for me). I think you will be too. I'll post more with my experiences as I get further down the road. By the way, Greg, Jeff, Zo and Scott have a lot of experience with Sonar and the V-Studio and post often. I think you'll find their input very valuable. Later guys.

Good stuff folks... great to hear the +ve comments about this surface... made the decision that bit easier. Very keen to start doing some damage alright.. this thing is going to make the process more creative and less technical I believe which was a major incentive to purchase. Swizzle I can relate about the studio rebuild... I'm now thinking of adding a bigger room with larger desk. Cheers to everyone and thanks for the helpful input.

Hey thanks Seth. Looking forward to it for sure and West LA have been excellent again.. also bought the MCU from them. Just been looking at the 700R and how it will all play along with reading up on Scott's manual. I am presuming, but I expect the 700R will take 240Vac ok? Cheers. Yeah Scott... there's bits in your manual that I can use now... I should say extra bits. You saved me some time last week when trying to sort out deleting... result was you need to hit select before delete to not get the pop up window... +1 for your ebook again! Today I started the studio make over to get ready for the 700R along with the La2a and possible new valve pre. Complete will be THE word mate. Cheers!

Ok... FINALLY getting to play with this setup (new business is taking a lot of time) and it is being pretty average. ASIO just gives trouble and WDM gives some joy but overall my setup is no where near as usable as with the MOTU. Example is old projects won't play and typically come up with "Device may not support the current project's audio form,at or may be in use." etc issues but under WDM they will often play BUT I can't explain how difficult getting the system to just play can be. Did not have these troubles in the MOTU world... suspect I will have to uninstall and reinstall everything which is obviously less than exciting. Ok, off for trip to Painville. I hope all the effort is worth it coz right now I'm a little jaded. ..apologies for the sook. I expected a lot simpler integration and I want to use this gear, not stuff around with it again.

UPDATE: Just tried a newer project with no cross Sonar version history and it seems ok under ASIO etc. I suspect the issue is with older projects in general that have some mish mash of sample rates. They played fine before installing the 700R though so I'm keen for input from anyone who may have experienced this already? UPDATE 2: ok... got it. Older project now plays but you HAVE to go back in sample rates until you get it to work. This means rebooting the 700R etc, so the issue, (if it can be described as that) is the inability of the 700R to detect what's going in the project which is kinda what the previous MOTU did ok without a hardware reset. Hmm.. not sure it's a great thing but now I know what the heck is actually going on. Hope this helps someone else coz I have probably missed something that is supposed to be obvious. Cheers.

Good stuff Mully. I really can't decide if I should get the V700 system. It's either that, or get a Lynx/Grace Design front end with no controller. I should probably go with the Lynx/Grace setup, but does all the extra cost really translate into a noticeably better end result? I don't know - feedback thus far is that the 700R sounds pretty damn good. Maybe it's coin flipping time. Did you get the 700C from the States also? I've found the prices in Oz to be outrageously more expensive, so would be interested to know if you managed to get a good deal here, or got it delivered from the US...

Mully, Yeah, that's the one drawback of the hardware is that you need to set the sampling rate manually and reboot the system. If you have an older project at a different sampling rate, then you need to change it on 700R so that it matches. I talked about this in the eBook: http://garrigus.com/?VStudio700eBook My solution is as follows (quoted from the eBook): Set the Sampling Rate Before Opening SONAR I'm sure there's a technical reason for having a manual sample rate setting, but it can still be annoying nonetheless. To save yourself some grief, you can keep track of a project's sample rate by adding it to the project filename. That way you can set the Sample Rate knob before even powering up the VS-700R or starting SONAR. Scott -- Scott R. Garrigus - Author of the Cakewalk Sonar and Sony Sound Forge Power book series. Hey James I got both units from the US. The 700C was an excellent option from and eBay listing for a new unit with a broken from input put for the DI which I won't use anyway, but will fix when I can be bothered to do it. The 700R I waited and waited for and eventually found West LA Music had make an offer on an eBay listing and I made a silly one and they accepted which was awesome. I should add that it was only silly by Oz pricing. Got both for about $2400US which is ridiculously good. I would definitely steer down this path if you intend to stay with Sonar. The V-Studio does get you very productive I believe and I'm finally gearing towards the long awaited CD.... once the other stuff settles. Scott yeah I remember reading this very point and the suggestion of adding sample rate to file names is very sound (pun intended). Worth the effort. I finally have come to grips with this process in the real world and can live with it now knowing older projects are accessible and am quite looking forward to all that the combination of these units now offers. Pretty impressive setup now I have to say along with the good outboard stuff... and the pending Drip LA2A build! Cheers and thanks guys.

$4500ish for ex-demo is a good deal. Won't be many in stock being ex-demo sadlybut a good deal. By the time I finished, I had spent (ball park) $1200AU for the controller and $2kAU for the IO give or take a couple of dollars and that was paying taxes and duty theft fees.... if I'd only had them sent as gifts.... The 700C got a last second bid that put it over the $1k trade limit by $12AU which then cost me another $200 in govt fees. Still was a good price so I didn't complain. Only problem with the 700R was the delay incurred by going through Oz Post and Customs... added another week and a half. More than happy with the deals although it took a while to get together... these things are excellent. Cheers!
