Well... I do agree with you about the beer. In America it seems the more sissy the beer the more manly the man who drinks it... ...rather odd... I have a tee shirt that says "friends don't let friends drink tasteless American girly beer..."

Hi Scott, I'd rather hope they were direct ancestors of yours - sorry about being so pedantic!

Keith, does that Woo-stah pronunciation relate to the American Worcester because nobody round here says it like that!!

Anyway, here's a picture of our beautiful Cathedral beside the river Severn:

Hi Steve,

Guide to pronouncing the MA Worcester here, at the bottom:
http://www.worcestermass.com/pronounce/worcestercounty.shtml#worcester

The Wormtown link is quite interesting.

Like the photo, though not sure it'll garner as much interest as spindleboxs!

Plan to tap meethane gas at mine
17/03/2006 12:44:37 PM
By Peter Reynolds

THE project managers for Singleton' first ever renewable energy power station is hopeful of having the station operational in a year.

Plans to build the 12 megawatt power station at Glennies Creek were revealed to Singleton Council on Monday night.

Manager of Tenix Projects, James Hayward, said the development application would be lodged in the next week.

If approved, the power station is to be built by EnviroGen, with Tenix Projects the project managers.

EnviroGen make renewable energy power stations using excess methane from coal production.

It is planned that the excess methane emission from Glennies Creek mine, which is operated by AMCI, will be piped to the new power plant site, which is connected to the power grid, using underground pipes with negative pressure to ensure there are no leaks.

Mr Hayward said that there were many benefits to be experienced by the installation of the power station.

"Glennies Creek mine has significant methane emission problems and EnvioGen has decided that the levels are high enough for a renewable energy power station to be built," he said.

"Currently methane gases from mines are released into the atmosphere.

"Methane is a greenhouse gas and is 20 times more destructive than carbon dioxide.

"This station will be a negative emitter, in that it consumes more greenhouse gas than it emits.

"As well as the environmental damage being caused, methane gas is a potential fuel that is currently being wasted."

The station is planned to be situated on the corner of Nobles Lane and Middle Falbrook Road, and will be single story, of about four metres, in height.

Mr Hayward said there may be more of these stations in the Singleton local government area in the future.

"Envirogen is in discussion with a number of local sites about similar projects in the future.

"A number of mines are looking at the option, some for internal energy use and some for sale back to the power grid."

Once the development application is lodged it will be considered by council staff before coming to a council meeting.

LOL

Why is American beer like making love in a canoe? They're both f&*#&ng close to water.

EDIT: Lest I be accused of anti US sentiment, let me even the score. Did you hear about the Englishman who wanted to become Irish so he went to a Harley St. specialist. The doctor told him it would involve an operation to remove 17% of his brain so he agreed. After the operation the surgeon was standing next to the patient's bed explaining to his colleagues how he'd removed 70% of the patient's brain. The specialist stopped him and said, "Hang on, it was supposed to be 17%!" At that moment, the patient awoke and said his first words, "Streuth, mate, stone the crows, what are all you Poms doing here?"

1) OOPS, you know what I meant. Who am I MERLIN?!

Keith, does that Woo-stah pronunciation relate to the American Worcester because nobody round here says it like that!!

2) MY 2-CENTS: That "Woo-stah", at least around here (Maine) is incorrect. It's pronounced "Wus-tah". Though as an American who's traveled to Europe a few times, most that haven't traveled don't know any better. We have a town on the coast named "Calais" and they pronounce it "Cal-ihss" not "Cal-ayyy". Also, down in Atlanta, Georgia, there is a street I lived near called "Ponce de Leon" (actually in a Beastie Boys song), but I digress. The natives pronounce it "Pon-ceee" for short, and it's Ponce de LEE-OHN.

3) Our UK/European reps are in (or near) Worcestershire. Ravenheart Music (http://www.ravenheartmusic.euro-site.co.uk/index.asp): ADDY: Ravenheart Music, PO Box 5212, Kidderminster, DY10 1UW, United Kingdom.

Well, that's all part of the great cultural divide. Down here we can't understand how you could possibly mistake beer for that lukewarm dish water you drink over there. I remember an English beer ad from the 80's where a Japanese tourist staring at a London tube map asks Paul Hogan, "Excuse me, how to Cockfosters?" and Paul replies, "Serve it warm."

P.S. You should also understand that Australians are pretty unimpressed by that strange liquid that masquerades as Fosters in the UK - not that anyone I know drinks Fosters here anyway.

The breweries in the county of Kent BTW.

There was a bit of a to-do about this one, got pulled from the London Underground IIRC.

spindlebox, do you know of Billy Bragg? (the bard of Barking as he's often known)

maybe you would know the Kirsty Mac Coll version better. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fwtFSEovro )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQgIwj70g_8&feature=related
is a very recent version by Billy.

Steve Strummer, way I remember the place name is... "woo-star-cher"

Crg, you know of Mr. Meethane ?? john shuttleworth I used to find funnier.. he used to be better known as Jilted John, years before. He's done other classics such as "Austin Ambassador Y Reg" (both on youtube also)

Hmmm, I never heard of either actually. Sorry. I have to say I like the Billy Bragg version better.

I lived in California for 20 years and Atlanta, Georgia for 5. I've really only lived in New England for 5 years of my ADULT life. If those two were known around here I guess I must have missed it!

You know what I love about the Brits? Fish and chips! Served hot in a peice of newspaper with some malt vinegar. Next time you get an order, read that newspaper, you'll find the war is over.

I don't mind American beer. The Brooklyn Brewery is very good, and sold in my local supermarket.

However, I wouldn't touch Bud with a bargepole.

In fact, I seem to remember before the world cup* in Germany, 2006, Bud was FIFA's beer of choice and had to be sold in the stadia. The Germans were up in arms "as people think we might like this piss" I believe the official quote was.

*This is the football world cup for non-football lovers.
