Plan to tap meethane gas at mine

THE project managers for Singleton' first ever renewable energy power station is hopeful of having the station operational in a year.

Plans to build the 12 megawatt power station at Glennies Creek were revealed to Singleton Council on Monday night.

Manager of Tenix Projects, James Hayward, said the development application would be lodged in the next week.

If approved, the power station is to be built by EnviroGen, with Tenix Projects the project managers.

EnviroGen make renewable energy power stations using excess methane from coal production.

It is planned that the excess methane emission from Glennies Creek mine, which is operated by AMCI, will be piped to the new power plant site, which is connected to the power grid, using underground pipes with negative pressure to ensure there are no leaks.

Mr Hayward said that there were many benefits to be experienced by the installation of the power station.

"Glennies Creek mine has significant methane emission problems and EnvioGen has decided that the levels are high enough for a renewable energy power station to be built," he said.

"Currently methane gases from mines are released into the atmosphere.

"Methane is a greenhouse gas and is 20 times more destructive than carbon dioxide.

"This station will be a negative emitter, in that it consumes more greenhouse gas than it emits.

"As well as the environmental damage being caused, methane gas is a potential fuel that is currently being wasted."

The station is planned to be situated on the corner of Nobles Lane and Middle Falbrook Road, and will be single story, of about four metres, in height.

Mr Hayward said there may be more of these stations in the Singleton local government area in the future.

"Envirogen is in discussion with a number of local sites about similar projects in the future.

"A number of mines are looking at the option, some for internal energy use and some for sale back to the power grid."

Once the development application is lodged it will be considered by council staff before coming to a council meeting.

Well, that's all part of the great cultural divide. Down here we can't understand how you could possibly mistake beer for that lukewarm dish water you drink over there. I remember an English beer ad from the 80's where a Japanese tourist staring at a London tube map asks Paul Hogan, "Excuse me, how to Cockfosters?" and Paul replies, "Serve it warm."

P.S. You should also understand that Australians are pretty unimpressed by that strange liquid that masquerades as Fosters in the UK - not that anyone I know drinks Fosters here anyway.

I don't mind American beer. The Brooklyn Brewery is very good, and sold in my local supermarket.

However, I wouldn't touch Bud with a bargepole.

In fact, I seem to remember before the world cup* in Germany, 2006, Bud was FIFA's beer of choice and had to be sold in the stadia. The Germans were up in arms "as people think we might like this piss" I believe the official quote was.
