Hard Disk/Sonar6 H/S

Hi

I'm kinda new to this fourm and Sonar6. This may be a dumb question but I have a Tascam DP-01 without FX. Can I record myself on the HD & then using Toslink to send the music to Sonar for the effects or just go strait to the computer & sell the HD. Thanks for the advice in advance...................

Depending on the outputs on the Tascam and the inputs on your PC soundcard, you could do what I do with my Boss Br-8, and use the Tascam as a pre-amp/mixer.
In other words, take the line-outs from the Tascam to the line-ins on your soundcard, and you'll be able to record straight into Home Studio. Personally I wouldn't sell the Tascam even if you replace it with a mixer, as it would be valuable for field recording.

    James,

You probably know this already but, for the record, if I record stuff to my Boss Micro-BR then want to work on it in Sonar, I use the BR Wave Converter software (here) to export the BR tracks and then import into SHS. Works perfectly. Also you can do it the other way around - i.e. export WAVs from SHS, then import into the BR unit to chosen virtual tracks. Great if you're off on a trip and want to add to it.

    Rgds

Oh ... I meant to say, it works for my MicroBR even though it's not advertised as doing so. It may well work for your BR-8 as well.

Hi Uncle, thanks for that. I was aware of the Wave Converter, but I've never used it. When transferring tracks from the BR-8 I used to export to some Date Backer software and from there into Sonar.

That's rare these days though, unless I take the BR-8 anywhere for recording. I do love the COSM efx in the Boss though, that's why I leave it hooked up as a pre-amp, it's terrific for modelling guitar sounds.

Thanks for the input james, now my soundcard is an emu-0404 (just beginning) it has both ins & outs optical & the Tascam has an optical out if I did it that way I'd get better quality or should I go the way you said.... Thanks

the emu 0404 is a great sounding card for the price. as for whether to use digital or analogue, i guess it doesn't matter, other than are the a/d converters on the tascam as good as those on the emu? if not, use the emu's converters.
