Hard Drive Configuration For New DAW
Hello Everyone,
I know there's been a lot of discussion on this topic, but I am still a little unsure of what my best setup would be given my situation.
I am having a custom box built for me which has:
-64 GB x 6 in RAID 0 SSD = 384 GB (Microcenter Rebranded ADATA 596)
-240 GB x 2 in RAID 0 SSD = 480 GB (Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe)
-2 TB 7200 RPM
-2 TB 7200 RPM
-2 TB 7200 RPM
What should go where? I am also planning on doing nightly backups to USB for any changed projects and weekly offsite copies.

Your first raid array should be your C drive. Windows, programs and such.
Your second raid array should be for your soft synths.
Your third drive should be an audio drive.
Your other two can be for backup and storage.

Hmmm I was thinking the 2nd array for music projects I am currently working on, no? Don't we need fast disk access for the waves in the project?
I guess for the softsynths i can do a RAID 0 out of the 7200RPM disks as well because I have loads of sounds banks, more than would fit on my SSD arrays.

You could. If the synths stream from the hard drive then you can't beat the performance of the SSDs. Those are just suggestions I would do. Hopefully, others with more knowledge of the subject will chime in.

Just a question, do we still need RAID when using SSD?
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit; AMD Phenom™ II quad-core processor 820; 8GB DDR3 SDRAM; 3.1GHz oc'd; 1TB hard drive; 1 TB 2nd hdrive, 1 TB usb 3.0 external HD. Roland Quad-capture, Casio PX-310; senheisser MK-4, Shure SM-58; Senheisser HD 380 pro, krk rokit6. Subaru forester 2012.

Well, I have a bunch of smaller 64 GB drives... how else would I combine them into one volume thats say 384 GB?

THe smaller the drive, the faster the access. You may want to put your OS and disk management stuff on a single 64 gig. I know Sonar runs far smoother on my SSD than it did on a conventional drive.

As to whether the synths you have stream from the HD, you would have to check with whoever whote the software. I would say most do today as we stream audio from our hard drives that we have recorded to the hard drive.
I may be wrong on this one but if you set two of the 2TB drives as raid (whatever number is mirroring) and make those your audio drives, you may find better playback performance. Even though it's writing the same thing to both drives it will stream from both of them.
Again, I have limited knowledge of this subject.
