Hard Drive specs

An easy question for most of you I'm sure.

I'm going to buy an additional internal hard drive (my third) and use it primarily (75%) for Sonar projects and audio and ~ 25% for archiving non-Sonar items (video etc.)

I know I should get 7,200 vs 5,400 rpm, but are there any other specs I need to be concerned about?
It will probably be between 300 and 500 GB. (SATA or IDE?)

Currently have dual core Intel 6600, 2.4GHz, 2 GB Ram running XP home and Sonar 8.01

Tks

    You will want to check your PC to see if you have a power connector for an additional drive as well as if there is an additional port for the drive on your MOBO. I'm guessing that your MOBO supports SATA which supports a faster sustained data transfer rate than IDE.

    That's one thing I'm not sure about... SATA vs IDE.

    In my BIOS the settings are:
    ATA/IDE Mode ----> "NATIVE"
    Configure SATA as ----> "IDE"
    .
    .
    .
    SATA Port 0 ---> Not Installed
    SATA Port 1 ---> WDC (one of my drives)
    SATA Port 2 ---> Not installed
    SATA Port 3 ---> my other drive

    Does all this mean I have an IDE or SATA drives?

    Looks to me like you have SATA to me with two free ports on the MOBO. I'd crack open the case and have a look to see if the PSU has an available power connector.

    That's what I thought... SATA but the BIOS setting says "Configure SATA as IDE".

    Don't have to worry about seek time, transfer rate, latency time, etc.?

    That's not a problem - all that means is that it's not a set of discs configured in a RAID.

    And check that the HDD docks of the case are high enough. I have a nice big Antec case, but the HDD docks are so shallow, that I can't use three HDDs, because the one in the middle runs too hot. There's simply not enough room for the air flow only about 3 mm/ 0,1 inches.

    I have an Antec case too. Must be a different model because I have plenty of space for 3 drives (~ 1.75" per dock).
    Drive is in and seems to be working fine. I didn't know if my mobo was SATA II compatable. Since I did NOT add the jumper to force it to SATA I and not having any problems, I assume I am getting the SATA II speed of 3 GB/s

    AAAH

    that may explain my recent HDD failure.
    It was the middle of 3 in an Antec dock (TX1050 case) - the dock did have a 80mm fan at the front but it was a 3 disc caddy - eeek my new boot HDD has gone right back into the filling of the sandwich......time to rearrange my HDDs I fear.

    Yep, I ripped out a few things in one of my rigs to alleviate a similar problem, make a bit more space for airflow. I always check the stuff by touch after adding HD's etc, and it got so freaking hot - you keep that up for a few weeks and it's fried.

    Seriously, waiting for an hr to screw the case back up, while powered, just check the temps manually, can save gear.
