Hard drive problems

Hi,

After about 3 years of use the hard drive in my computer became un-bootable last October. The drive was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA. As it turns out, that model had a known defect that was repairable with a bios update.

I performed the bios update and the drive worked just long enough for me to get everything I wanted off of it and then stopped booting again so I figured it was time to replace the drive.

I replaced it with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA and now, after finally getting everything re-installed, re-licensed, etc..., it too is now just going to a black screen with an "Insert bootable disk" message...after 2 months of use

I only use this computer for recording so there is nothing on the drive except for Sonar and music files.

The computer has never been online.

So, I have 2 questions:
  1. Is this just a case of bad luck or is there possibly some other reason that the drives are dying?
  2. If it's bad luck, what would be the best alternative to Seagate?  I'd prefer not to have to go through this again in 2 months.
Thanks!

I've always preferred Western Digital, but their prices have gone through the roof recently, due to their factory being flooded.

It may not necessarily be the HDD itself that caused the problem.  I once had a drive become corrupted due to a bad SATA port on the motherboard.  After connecting it to a different port, I was able to rescue the data (using some free disk-rescue software) and re-format the disk.

Bristol_Jonesey & Kev999: Thanks very much for the responses. As it turns out I tried the computer tonight and it booted up but, once it was finished booting I got one of those "Found new hardware" messages. The new hardware it found was the hard drive!

So I guess that the motherboard was not recognizing the hard drive or something. Anyway, I'm not sure how long it will last but my data is backed up so I'll just wait and see.

    Thanks again!

I agree...when I worked in data centers, we had more problems with Seagate drive failures than I care to remember, and these were the 10,000 and 15,000 rpm big $$$$ SCSI drives (back in the day before SATA).  I personally tend to stick with WD...I've never had a problem with one failing.  I can's say that for Seagate or Fujitsu.  On a side note, stay away from WD "green" drives.  The blue series are OK, but the black series are the better ones with faster seek and larger buffers.  I have a couple of Hitachi drives in some home computers, but they sound like they run on diesel.  My studio rig is all WD and whisper quiet.  Just my $.02 worth right there...hope it helps.

I recently have had a boot issue where upon bootup it says "insert boot disk and restart" or something of the sort.  I hit F8 while it's booting and I manually choose the HD to boot from on the list (I have 5).  Not sure why the settings in BIOS got messed up but it does not seem to be a drive problem.

    Maybe yours is similiar?

Yea, that's pretty close to the message I got. Although everything seems to be working right now I appreciate the F8 tip because there's no way of knowing if/when the problems will recur.

If the MB is not connecting to the HD intermittently, one possible solution is to move the HD to another connector (socket) on the MB. If you do change the connector, you will probably need to go into BIOS and set the new drive location as the first drive in the boot sequence. This assumes you have already unplugged both ends of the HD cable, cleaned the contacts and re-seated the connector.

If you never changed your boot disk ROM selector there somewhere in the ROM, perhaps you still have the CD as the first boot up disk, perhaps not. Whatever hard drive you boot up from should be listed in the ROM as the first boot device, then the second is perhaps like the CD, so if the harddisk fails, you can boot up from your original OS CD. I had a WD drive fail, and have two Seagates (only 500GB and 160GB the 160GB came with the machine is getting old) so that is all I can say about HardDrives.

Starting up manually by hitting F8 just after Windows start is always an option. If you have more than one hard drive you should have the boot drive listed first in the ROM and the other hard drives after that or like mentioned the CD to boot from.
