Hard drives How Many?

I'm new here and I'm sure this has been adressed.
Building my computer.
Hard Drives....How many 2 or 3.

1 Operating System
2 Data ? is that for the audio being recorded.
3 I'm guessing for samples like loops or something.

Clarification please.
Thanks

    I have 3:

    60GB Windows
    250GB audio
    250GB loops/backups (SATA)

I ended up using the SATA drive for loops/backups because it's slower than my 250GB IDE. It probably shouldn't be, but whatever...

    I have 3 120 gig IDE drives.

    1 for programs
2 in a raid that is set up as a mirror.

the 2 raids are partitioned into 2 sections 1 for sonar audio, the other for samples loops, itunes, pics etc.

seems to work fine I have about 35% left on the audio drive so have to off load some old stuff soon!

    I use 4 x 160gb.

IDE-0 = 2 x 40gb Partitions for OS (DAW and Gen. Use) and 80gb partition for "My Documents" folder
    IDE-1 = 1 partition for "Sounds"
    SATA-1 = Audio
    SATA-2 = Backups

    I use 3 physical drives.

1.) 120 GB Seagate Barracude 7200 RPM for Windows XP system and apps (C: SYSTEM)
2.) 160 GB Seagate Barracude 7200 RPM for Sonar data (D: DATA)
3.) 160 GB Seagate Barracude 7200 RPM for Archive (Z: ARCHIVE BACKUP)

I use a program called Folder Clone that copies everything from the D to Z every hour or whatever you want to set it and essentially keeps my data in sync across 2 physical drives. I've recently added another PC to my home network that I will create another Folder Clone job that copies the D drive to it. Not a perfect backup solution but there's enough redundancy to feel reasonably secure. Unless, of course, if my place burns down I'm screwed.

I have (3) internal IDE 7200RPM drives & (3) external IDE 7200RPM drives (using ADS firewire enclosures).

    Internal IDE:

    (1) 20GB (OS & programs)
    (1) 30GB (record drive for video avi, mov & mpg files )
    (1) 40GB (divided into 2-20GB partitions for file storage)

    External IDE Firewire:

    (1) 120GB (divided into 3-30GB partitions for audio loops & sample libraries)
    (1) 20GB (record drive for audio wav files)
    (1) 100GB (backup drive, divided into 3-40GB partitions for OS, loops & samples backup)

I just bought my 100GB backup drive (Maxtor) for $29.00 @ Micro Center after $40.00 rebate.

I even have a couple extra 20GB HD's, in my storage closet, just in case, of emergencies. You can never have too many hard drives available.

And of course the answer is: Two.

    One for system.
    One for your projects.

All other storage is USB offline.

    Why:

    1) Heat.
    2) Noise.
    3) Reliability.

Sorry, Let me finish that post:

Drive C: Win XP, SONAR 5, Picture Cache folder

Drive D: Audio File Folder and all Bundles

External Drive: Backup for all Bundles

I also have Norton Ghost, when it works, to back up my C drive everytime I nmake a change.
