1-I had a lot of trouble with random missing notes until I raised the MIDI buffer. Now it happens only occassionally and I have to hit the ALL NOTES OFF icon. Not sure why that works unless it clears the buffer of data X1 is not purging. That would be a major bug. 2-I get stuck notes some Kontackt libraries (e.g., Electri6ity), but not with external synths. 3-I would not besmirch MOTU because they make great gear, but I did have so much trouble with a brand-new MOTU 5x5 MIDI interface that I had to go back to my old M-Audio 4x4. Those random bits probably don't help--just more information for the logic matrix.

The MIDI express 128 often does not appear after a reboot. It needs to be powered off and on (by unplugging the USB cable). That is because there is nothing in the hardware that can recognize a reboot, and some motherboards do not kill power to the USB ports, even when the computer is shut down! Maybe the XT as well? I don't think I've ever had that problem with any USB hardware, and it doesn't really make sense to me because many USB devices, including the Express XT, are not bus-powered so they can be (and maybe even should be) powered up when the O/S is booted so that they'll be properly detected. You should generally be able to plug-in or power up any USB device either before or after boot, and have it detected and the driver loaded by the O/S. Whether a running application can pick it up on the fly or not is another question, but I'm wasn't asking ClockWorks to do that. All that said, the problem turned out to be much more basic... someone (I'm blaming the dogs) pulled the USB cable out of the DAW.

konradhThose random bits probably don't help--just more information for the logic matrix. More data points are always welcome. I'll just clarify that I'm pretty sure the MIDI Prepare Using buffer only affects the buffering up of soft synth audio. MIDI to hardware ports isn't buffered. In general, soft synth MIDI tracks behave a lot more like audio than like old-school hardware-based MIDI.

Danny Danzi Sorry about that. Try this link for the one that didn't load up. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4909348/6oclock.mid Hey. Danny. This one is playing fine with the new XT driver in place. I'm not sure where you need to look on you system to correct thtis problem, but at least we know it can work. The only thing I think we've pretty much ruled out is a general SONAR bug and the XT driver and Clockworks software. It could still be any of: SONAR Config ClockWorks Config XT firmware/hardware (Mine is one of the earliest made with Windows-compatible firmware - it actually shipped with a chip that I had to swap in). O/S, MOBO or 3rd-party hardware/driver interoperability issue. Hardware synth response. This last one we can probably rule out if it's happening with more than one synth.

I played both MIDI files with no problems Danny. I use 2 Cakewalk um3g USB MIDI interfaces one is going to a Roland Sound Canvas SC 8850. This in on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate with Sonar X1c 64 bits.

All that said, the problem turned out to be much more basic... someone (I'm blaming the dogs) pulled the USB cable out of the DAW. I was referring specifically to the express 128. It recognizes only a power dip in order to be re-enumerated (detected on a USB port) by Windows, even after a reboot. Most USB devices do not have this behavior, but the express 128 is the 2nd one I've seen that cannot be reinitialized without a power dip. It is a hardware limitation of at least one cheap USB peripheral chipset I know of (the micro CPU and bus logic that is part of the USB device). Couple that with a M.B. that does not drop power from the USB ports, and thus it requires unplugging the USB cable. Trained dogs would help .

Thank you all for posting your experiences and info. I really do appreciate it. brundle: thanks for going through the pains of hell to try your XT for me with all this stuff. It's obviously something on my end somewhere....but as long as I can play single patches I'm ok. It would have been nice to have my stuff play through the midi gear like it used to....but until I can find out what this is, I'll just chalk it up as an anomaly. Thanks again! :) -Danny

Glad to help. Like i said at the outset, that's a tough one. Sure would like to know what's going on, but I think I'd have to lay hands on the system to get any further, and even then, it might remain a mystery.

One thing Danny you may want to look at is the MIDI timing resolution.

SONAR always runs at 960PPQ internally for both recording and playback The PPQ resolution setting in Preferences only affects editing resolution.

John One thing Danny you may want to look at is the MIDI timing resolution. Thanks John, but wouldn't that be more for a timing offset problem? All I'm getting is stuck notes and a few dropped notes. Also, in case you may have missed it in my posts on here....the midi plays fine through everything but my hardware units. TTS-1 is flawless and all other softsynths are too. Even MS Wavetable is perfect. My old problem used to be THEY were dropping notes on me...but raising the playback buffers totally stopped that problem. I have no clue what could be causing this...I've literally tried everything I could think of between the stuff brundle and you mentioned as well as things on my own. I don't know what to think at this point..."Gremlins"? LOL! -Danny
