Has Anyone Renewed Their Waves Plug-Ins

This seems to be a controversial subject. I'm not sure what I'll loose if I decide not to renew. It seems a bit expensive.
What are the advantages other than future factory support?

Go through 3rd party vendors like everyplugin.

The upgrades are only worthwhile if you bought a bundle.

Is there any way to tell if there are upgraded versions?  The functionality doesn't seem to exist in Waves Central.

wup (if that is what you are meaning) is optional, i have paid the wup on some bundles that i own when there was a benifit to me, ie additional plugins added to the bundle  which bundle owners get for free. otherwise there really isn't any real need to wup, unless of course there is an issue with a particular plugin, something which i myself have not come across and i own around 90% of the available waves plugs.

you can see if there are upgraded versions or if your version is behind by checking in your account at the waves site, again, there really isn't a need to wup, unless there is a benefit to you. if you don't wup your plugins will still be available and work as they always have regardless.

myself, i will wup everything every other year just to be current (although it probably doesn't matter, and or as i said if something is added to a bundle i own which i will get for free as owner of said bundle) that's my take anyway.

To the op , i upgrade only when benefical for me , understand here only when they added enoght great additional plugins to mercury for me to jump , alwayz dealing here with wavesuniverse for all my waves deal , super fast and pro , exellent support and commincation ..
If you own a bundle that has zero addition other time , the only beneficial thing to update would be only if your system need the last version for compatibility

None of my Waves stuff has ever been updated. I don't see me ever paying the WUP. My WUP is more than I paid for all my Waves plugs combined. Really a concept that doesn't fit in with their frequent blow-out pricing.

I always check to see if any additions plugins has been added to my bundles and if so, then I may upgrade, but other than that, I don't upgrade.

I own it, it's on my computer and it works.

you don't need WUP to install the latest version. reinstalling plugs using WAVES Central always gives you the latest version. Unfortunately, there is no way inside WAVES Central to tell if there are newer versions available so you need to remember last time you installed it and check the release news

I had a heap of Waves things, WUP'ed them once, nothing was new, sold almost everything eventually. I'm down to two Waves plugs now and will NEVER pay for WUP. If you have bundles, it may be worth it, though. Lovely plugs, just don't like the company that much.

They update individual Waves plugins all the time but it's not possible to check if something has a newer version.  They do have a webpage that lists changes, but it isn't detailed enough really:

http://www.waves.com/downloads/release-notes

So once every month or so I use Waves Central to just download and install everything again.  That way I know I have the latest versions.  You don't need a valid WUP to get the latest version as long as the major version number hasn't changed (everything is v9 right now).  So until they release v10, only renew a WUP if you have a bundle and they added a new product to it.

Re: Has Anyone Renewed Their Waves Plug-Ins 2017/03/24 12:21:56 (permalink)
Thank you for the comments.

I don't own any bundles. I have maybe  half dozen individual plug ins. I somehow lost one of my plug in's and this is what led me to Waves central again. I was able to transfer licenses and download my missing plug-in. All of my waves plug ins work fine on my win 10 computer.

I like a few of their plug ins enough to buy them again. If I owned a large studio and used a bundle on a daily basis it might make sense. I seldom use my Waves plug ins and everything works. I see no need to wup. I wondered if I had missed something, a hidden benefit to wup? I suspect if the plug ins become obsolete and I'm forced into a corner to upgrade. I would instead look for substitutes.

If I later decided to buy a bundle it looks as if I would need to pay monthly for it. Once again, for big studios this might make sense. For me frankly, no. Maybe this is the market they are going after?

Thanks for the tips on WUP everyone. I was curious if it would be worth it to pay for another year - I have the Platinum Bundle and a couple os signature Waves plugins. $300 seemed kind of steep for me. The forum has helped another person!

Thank you for the info.  I'm really surprised by this;   this is 2017, and such functionality is very common.  I mean, even free software these days have built in autoupdate functions.

Re: Has Anyone Renewed Their Waves Plug-Ins 2017/03/24 13:55:15 (permalink)
I own three bundles and one single plug: Mercury (the biggie), Abbey Road and SSL. The single plug is Mushroom pusher.

WUP last cost me ~225.00. It has always worked to my advantage and lately through happenstance I got 18 months of WUP at one shot.

How did that work?

Well, a yearly WUP adds 12 months to everything I own based on the last expiry date of any plug or bundle. So right now Mushrooms WUP expires Sept 2017 (because I bought it in Sept 2016 and came with one year of WUP), but everything else is WUPped until Feb 2018. Which I bought in April 2016.

"What?", you say, "How did an April 2016 WUP get you to Feb 2018?". Well ,it just so happens that when Abbey Road released an add on to that bundle that I snagged it at a sale price in Feb 2016 (because WUP had previously expired), that pushed my Abbey Road bundle (and only Abbey Road bundle) WUP out to Feb 2017.

Then when I purchased the "full" WUP in April 2016 for everything I own, Feb 2017 for Abbey Road became Feb 2018 for everything. That exercise got me every Greg Wells plug (and a coule more) in Mercury for free.

Now, I never did upgrade to the Abbey Road tape thing. And therein lies my next entry into ~18 months of WUP again. Which I'll address in 2018.

Could I theoretically buy a bundle and wup it every 5 years? That might make more sense. Find a deal on a bundle and wup at longer intervals. For awhile Waves had some really good deals on bundles buying to own, not renting.

Thanks for that info guys.

I'm going into sly, frugal plug in watch mode now. If it flies too close to me I might bite it.I have exceeded my big music purchase budget for this month, unless I attempt to bury it in other places. That might not be good for marital relations.

The good news is that anything I buy from now on will be compatible with win 10 64. No big OS transitions happening that I'm aware of. This is good for plug ins.

There's a reason why you see Waves plugins on sale. There's also a reason why some iLok required software if free. Waves and Pace had bad reputations many years ago.  At one time there was a 30+ page thread on Northern Sound Source of people who will no longer use Waves because of the WUP.  Pace had a reputation of creating system problems.  At one time many of use who never used iLok software would search for the system files and delete them.

On my Waves product page, one column lists "Update Plan" and under that it says "renew coverage". The next column lists "Upgrade" and has upgrade underneath that. After reading this thread I'm still confused. I assume WUP is waves update? Or Waves upgrade? Or is it renew coverage like the OP states at the top of this thread?

I noticed a reference in this thread to renting the software or buying it. I'm confused as to what's going on with my products. Am I forced to renew coverage in order to keep using the plugins? In other words am I renting? I thought I had bought this bundle and today I bought 1 additional plugin. I hope I’m not renting it and will end up paying $300 over the years.

I’m not interested in getting upgrades or updates just using the plugins without being surprised one day that they don’t’ work because my rent it up

I had two bundles going circa 2002. I decided that WUP was a dumb move so I Waved goodbye. I guess if you update all your operating system and other software every year, then maybe? but I keep a system going for about ten years typically - kind of like a car.

Like if Ford had a WUP requirement. Really?  the Waves WUP is sort of like "leasing" the software., so you can get an updated car every year or so. Makes no sense to me.

there are just too many great plugins that compete with Waves now for this to make sense.

I do like my RenComp and the Vox thing, and the Mushroom Pusher.

Put the $300 Wup into buying some other cool stuff.

Well, I'm really glad/appreciative of this thread. I only have Super Tap, True Verb, Doubler, GTR Amp+Stomp+Tool Rack+Tuner, CLA GTRS and JJP Vocals. These are my first ones, over the past year+ and when I got the WUP email, I got pissy about that and wondered what would happen to my investing in them, even at bargain prices.
So, there's plenty of clarity now thanks to all of you!
