Has the bar raised for video cards and X3?

My current card (ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro PCI-e 2.0, 128MB) has been trouble free and worked great for Sonar up to Ver X2 (still does).

But with X3, console view is glitcy and hangs to the point that I really don't want to use it anymore. I stay in track view with X3.

For those who are in the know more than I, could this behavior be related to video card's onboard memory of 128MB?

Hi David,

Pop in a passive-cooled HD5450 (~$30 - 1GB onboard RAM)

Maybe or maybe not. I'm using older cards with not much RAM. I found that updating the drivers cured all the glitches.

Thanks Kev - I did update the driver - I was hoping but it didn't completely cure the problem. I will say my graphics in general were a little better afterwards.

I don't really know Zo what's under the software hood. But what I do know is X3 with touchscreen capability (which I don't use) has been almost unusable in console view with my current setup. If I disable all metering in console view, that frees up enough resources to appear to run smoothly. But then no meters. Not good.

As mentioned above, I took the advice and ordered a new video card yesterday. That should cure the symptoms here. I have no problem doing some upgrades to keep up with technology. Trying to figure out when and what to upgrade has been a challenge until this thread. FTR: both X1 and X2's console view ran smoothly on this daw.

I'm currently just using the built in Intel HD4000 video that is in my i7 3770 CPU.  I had been using an ATI Radeon HD7770 video card as the video port on my motherboard had died.  After several other problems with the motherboard it was sent back to Gigabyte for warranty repair.  The repaired board (looks like a new board) works again so I'm using the Intel video as long as I don't run into any problems, and so far with X3 I haven't had any issues.

Eliminating the HD7770 video card also eliminated two fans, although they were not noisy.

I have a passive gpu (tha ati 5450 ) and it's smooth on X1 ...i skipped X2 and when i tried X3 i noticed a lot of thing that slows the process like crazy (like doubling the instertion time of Track multimbral templates and some )

To test , be sure to have zero plugin inserted also (i noticed that last slate and waves are using a graphical engine that when a lot of gui are displayed , will slow all the graphic including sonar's one)

i tried on my laptop (HP 8560w quadro FX 1000 M) with several certified profil , same thing ...HW accelearation or not ...

I don't like that so i stayed on X1 despite all the thing i want from X3
(i don't even talk about the mess i had with plugins after the new scan thing process)

Thanks again. Done.

Outcome: Improved the graphics in console view and allows me to use it again. That's a big deal!!

Watching the counter at the top of the screen, there is still a "slight" difference in smoothness from the track screen. But nothing like I was experiencing prior to the 5450 being installed.

Edit/update: The latest Windows upgrade to 8.1 also made nice improvement. Coupled with the new graphics card, Sonar X3 is smooth again. Nice...
