Have HS 7XL, downloaded X1 trial but want to know how X1 will affect HS7XL created files.

More specifically, if I decide not to go with X1 after the trial and revert back to using HS7XL, will there be any compatibility issues with any HS7XL created files that I used in X1 during the trial?

Also, for those of you who did the trial, how did you install X1 (in another directory, same directory, deleting other DAW software first, etc.)?

Thanks.

You do not have to delete anything. All versions of Sonar (all Cake software) will install themselves into separate directories.
Anything you work on in X1, do a "Save As" with say X1 in the file name.
That way your original HS7 file will remain untouched.
If you add Pro Channel, or any effects that are not included in HS7, then you could have some issues.
Sonar 8.5 was the one and only "upgrade" that Cake has ever released.
If you uninstall Sonar 8, it hoses 8.5. BUT, 8.5 is still a separate program, weird but that's the way it is.

I don't have a problem opening up projects saved in x1, in 8.5 but I obviously lose prochannel settings. I get a warning that the project was made, but it works fine.

I wouldn't personally go back and forth too much though.

Hmm Good question, I had some issues with Sonar HS7 MIDI files not working correct in X1 but It must of been a setting I had wrong because when my HP died and I replaced it with a ASUS G73SW and installed all my software everything worked perfectly, FYI I was using SONAR HS7 and X1 both on the same machine with no issues at all ie. no files overwritten or typical problems associated with using updated or newer products from same company.
I have not tried to create a file in X1 and see if it can be opened in SONAR HS7.
This has made me curious so in a few minutes I will make something then save it and see what Errors if any I get and I will post my findings.
Give me approx 2 hours though as I am not able to start this second.

Going back and forth between versions is no problem with the exception of any of the new stuff like Pro Channel.  How you can get around this, if you want to retain what you did with Pro Channel is bounce that track down to a new track.  Then when you open it in HS7 you have the track with the processed effect preserved.  You will get the warning when switching but any bounced tracks without Pro Channel being turned on again will be just as you last heard them.

Thank you all for your thoughtful responses.  I installed X1 and unfortunately it wouldn't recognize my "seasoned" but excellent audio interface (Aardvark Direct Pro LX6).  I suspected I would have problems getting it work.  I'm sure it's a driver issue (Aardvark went out of business 7 or 8 years ago, so no driver updates since then).  All is not lost though since it does work with HS 7XL.  I'll just stay put until I upgrade audio interfaces.
