Have to open properties before I have sound

When I open Sonar X2 each time why do I have to open Properties, press OK before I have any sound? Have to do this each time. Thanks.

chuck, when I initially open a project in Sonar X2 the sound doesn't work. Press the space bar, play the song and there's no sound. Press P on my keyboard (open Properties), Click OK (don't have to do anything else) and I have sound. I've tried this on 2 different projects and it's the same for both.

my guess would be that sonar has lost your soundcard (drivers).

what is your soundcard and which driver mode are you using?

you should be able to look in preferences/drivers and see the driver type you are using.
in this case it should be set to ASIO.
what i think is happening is your soundcard is somehow being disconnected each time you open sonar.

now this can happen for a few different reasons, driver conflict, crashes.

in thats same preference menu look in playback/your soundcard should have check marks next to it.
    can you confirm this?

next time you open a project, before you click on preferences(or what your calling properties)take a look at your master fader in/out.
if its blank, than this will confirm your soundcard is lost apon start up.

once you confirm this we can move on to a solution.

Yes, it's Asio. The "Asio4all v2 SonarPDR" always pops up each time Sonar X2 is opened.

    Here's a screenshot. http://chasms.com/_abboso/abbo1.htm

As you can see the actual asio for my card is grayed out.

"take a look at your master fader in/out."

Don't know exactly where this is. I've had Sonar for awhile but have been using FL Studio and occasionally play around with Sonar to see if if I might like it.

ASIO4All is a third party wrapper for use with Software that only runs in ASIO mode and audio interfaces that only supply WDM drivers. In your case SONAR can run in either ASIO or WDM mode and your audio interface has both native ASIO and WDM drivers. You might want to uninstall the ASIO4All stuff and use the manufacturers driver or at least deselect the ASIO4All drivers (both input an output) and select the native M-Audio driver.

scook, thanks. I could have sworn that I had tried that and it didn't work. But now it does. Can you believe it? User error.

At least it is sorted out now. Thanks for posting the image of your config, that help with the suggested fix. FYI, should the native ASIO driver gives you any trouble, try using SONAR in WDM mode before resorting to ASIO4All. All the ASIO4All software does is wrap the WDM driver and present it to the host as an ASIO driver.

What properties are you referring to? Also why are you using ASIO4all?

so it was a driver issue,
there is no reason to be using asio4all here,
you should be using the drivers for your soundcard.asio or WDM.
hence the reason you were needing to open up preferences everytime you opened up sonar(a driver conflict)

what i ment by lookig at your master fader was,if you see under your master fader it will typicaly have your input/outputs and your outputs would have been labeled asio4all or there would have been nothing there or sometimes sonar gives a warning apon opening"there are no audio outputs" message.

either way glad its sorted,i would go to AVID and download the latest drivers for your soundcard.
    keep up on them.

happy jamming on a great DAW.
