Have you heard this before?

I'm sketching out a piece that sounds more and more familiar to me...if I've unintentionally copied the chord structure I don't want to continue working on it.
Several years ago I had realized mid way through a piece I was working on that it was from the movie "Exodus" I had seen as a kid.
Thanks,
Randy

Hmmm... Not familiar with the exact structure... With so much additional stuff in your piece, would it really matter?

    Nice start by the way

Thanks for the encouragement guys... I really do like it so I hope it's "original" and not something I subconsciously plagiarized.
    Thanks again,

Other than some passing thoughts about a Bach Sinfonia, it passes the original test here. I'd say it evokes Bach's style rather than copies anything directly, so you are good to go as far as I know.

Well, I got my answer and I'm not too happy with it.
I was just making myself breakfast and the piece was relentlessly playing in my head (I'm sure you know what I mean) and it morphed into a piece I used to really admire called Tony's Theme from the movie Scarface (I wore out the cassette tape containing the soundtrack by 1984).
I looked it up and the main theme of my piece is pretty much the same chord structure...even same key.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOSctvrUf24
That said, I think my piece is different enough in style as well as having other sections added that I won't worry about copyright issues or feel guilty about finishing the piece...but I will certainly acknowledge Giorgio Moroder's influence if/when I post the final video on YT.

Ol pal, there is nothing new under the sun. Those ol twelve tones have been flogged for just about all they're worth. Quite literally everything references something else in some way or ways. Some more obvious than others but still derivative. Don't over worry about it...just enjoy (and continue to let the rest of us enjoy as well) your lovely song.

Something on the order of one to five billion songs have been written or sung or played. There is no way I know of to come up with a new chord progression.
Major artist have legal issues often over these facts.

Johnny Cash wrote Folsom Prison Blues.
"Cash took the melody for the song and many of the lyrics from Gordon Jenkins's 1953 Seven Dreams concept album, specifically the song "Crescent City Blues".[6] Jenkins was not credited on the original record, which was issued by Sun Records. In the early 1970s, after the song became popular, Cash paid Jenkins a settlement of approximately US$75,000 following a lawsuit."

Usher and Bieber as of late..
Not good news for Justin Bieber and Usher. A court ruled Thursday that the pair will have to face a $10 million lawsuit alleging copyright violation for “Somebody to Love,” a single off Bieber’s My World 2.0, according to Reuters

Sometimes people just steal stuff, sometimes people have no idea in there head that they are copying someone else work.

If I write a 1/4/5/ blues song that starts out with " Woke up this morning" is that stealing? Where you draw the line is not at all clear.

I used the bass line from Billy Jean to produce a cover of Big Boss Man. It has been on the market for over ten years and Michael Jackson's legal team has never call to gave me a problems. And for sure that album has only sold in the thousands so it is not a well know hit.

Bottom line, if you feel good about your music then do it. If you willingly use someone else work then be ready to talk to the wonderful legal folks...lol

    Cheers,

    Billy
