Having problem with getting Akai LPD8 to work with sonar X1

The Akai comes with it's own editor and it's plug n play, but can't seem to assign the pads to any specific note on the keyboard or any sounds. If I  just open a midi track and a soft synth and assign the input to the LPD8/ omni,  it will sound out, but only in a major scale format ( 8 Pads = 8 notes ). If I use the LPD8 editor it seems to go into my input/output section of sonar and unchecks the routing config of midi and now shows no LPD8, which means no sound.
 
The overall goal here is to be able to assign any note or sounds to whatever pads I want to.
