Hawks and Doves

Sometimes I don't know if I should tell the whole story or just post the song.

In this case, I will just post the song and appreciate any and all feedback on the recording, mix or song itself.

Jeff, there is omething that just doesn't fit like on the other song.  You really do nice work but something just doesn't fit.  Is that sample bass or real bass.  I like this tune.  It's right in my comfort zone.  Send an email to me so I can get your address.  I need to ask you something but I'd rather do it on email.  Again, you certainly don't have to!

Hey Warren. Thanks again. I sent you an email.

I play guitar and the bass on all my songs and use drum loops from BetaMonkey and some of the ones that came with Sonar XL and Guitar Tracks Pro, which is where I started long ago.

Hi Beagle. Thanks for the listen. I attempted several layers of guitar on this and still tried to get the bass to come through. I am making progress. I haven't been able to focus on music since last summer so I am glad to be producing some songs.

I came across some new VST compressors and they have helped me a good bit to keep things clean and separated.

You can tell the whole story for those of us who like to read while we're listening.  Those who don't, don't have to. :)

Nice song!  Sometimes it seems like a synth/guitar? is a little overpowering.  Nice vocals.

Hey Janet. Thanks. As far as synth/guitar are you meaning the lead deal at the end or something else during the main part of the song?

It's so true what they say about never liking your own voice. I really appreciate the mention of the vocals.

I can't remember where I started writing these lyrics, but I was 22 and it was right after the Persian Gulf war in 1991. I just wrote the lines in a book somewhere. I've wanted to record this song for 20 years and I finally did it.

As a player I am very limited to just straightforward guitar parts. I really wish I could play keys or midi synth and come up with new sounds. On projects like these I just try to get them done in a reasonable sonic fashion so I don't forget them.

This song had a second verse but because the lyrical pattern was so stretched out I dropped it from the song. It's six minutes as it is.

I think maybe it's the distorted guitar.  Not quite sure.  Or maybe the bass?

Glad you finally got to record this one.  Feels good, doesn't it?  :-)

Only listening on lappy, but the distortion on the guitar throughout seems to be a little overpowering. Drums could use a little more variation to break it up a bit. Your vocal sound is good and fits the style, but hard to hear the words with the guitar so up front.

The drums get old pretty quick on this.  The phase or flange affect on the drums is also a little annoying to me.  Check the pitch on some of the vocal parts.  If we can't be honest here than whats the point of the forum.  Sorry to be down on your production.  It has great possibilities.  I like the lead at 3:35.  The effect not liked on the drums works much better on guitar.  The change at 5:30 was very welcome but should have come much sooner.  Maybe more than my 2 cents.
