Hayelp!!! Trying to install X3 Studio and confused.
Sorry guys, I'm sat here trying to install X3 Studio which I've just upgraded to, and I want to put the core program on C: as default and the plugins and instruments etc on a seperate drive. I'm looking at the options on the install program and getting confused. I've selected "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR X3 Studio" as the destination, but I haven't been asked for any other destinations. But then on the next screen I can choose what type of installation (Recommended/Custom/Full/Minimal etc). Should I just select Custom and tick the Program files box, and then do the installation process again but tick everything else, sending them to another destination? I thought I'd be sending things to specific locations in one go. :-/ Apologies if I'm being thicker than normal.

The installation process asks you which folders you want to install features to, but it is more near the end if I recall correctly. The best is to do the "Custom" installation and walk through each of the screens. You will not install anything until near the end of the process (the actual "install" button), so can always back out until that point. Be sure to right click the installation file and "run as administrator" as well.

Right, thanks - going with Custom installation then, and I'll leave the various ticks unchanged - which is most of the boxes but I notice V-Studio components are not ticked, wonder what that is...

https://www.google.com/search?q=cakewalk+v-studio&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe= Cakewalk's V-Studio is Hardware Components that were created and sold when Cakewalk was owned by Roland. The Cakewalk developers made custom tweaks to make those hardware controllers especially well integrated with the DAW. I've heard some people complain about the integration not being as good as they would like and others have raved about it. I've never tried them. To me, Touch is the obvious answer. I don't wonder where my controller nob is mapped to on the screen if I'm touching the screen itself. So, if you don't own a V-Studio controller, you don't need this.

Ah, right - this is making more sense now, thanks Mettelus, I was a bit concerned about messing it up. edit: Hold the front page... Its put Dimension LE with the main program on C: for some reason, given my strategy it would make sense outting that with the plugins etc right?

The default sound library with Dim Pro is not "huge" so if it defaults to the program directory (and you cannot change it in the installer), I would let it have its way. The part that does save space is to put sound libraries in another location. Some of them can be rather large. You can also move sound libraries around after the installation and adjust your folder preferences in X3 later on as well. Edit: Also, if you have space on backup media, it is a good idea to save the installation files, so you will not have to re-download them in case you ever need them again for some reason.

Okay, its actually happy to be moved, but I think it made its first appearance in the confirmation screen, unlike the other components. Yup, good thought re backing up installation files. :)

Oh no, I've been taken into Melodyne's installation now... its downloaded an update... which I assume the installation program will acess, but its now asked where its 32bit plugins go, do they have to go in the Program Files (x86) folder on the C drive (which it defaulted to) or can I put them in a subfolder with my other plugins? Sorry about this. :)

I think you're making this hard for yourself here. Just go with the default settings.

Too late for that now, I've put the plug-ins elsewhere, but do the 32 bit melodyne plug-ins need to be in that x86 folder, or can I put them where I want to?

From a functional point of view VST plugins can go anywhere as long as Sonars VST Scanner has the paths to their location so they can be scanned.
From an organisational point of view there are some considerations though. Also there are consideration about optimal performance that says having them on the same drive as your OS is preferred.
VST plugins can be moved after installation.

> Also there are consideration about optimal performance that says having them on the same drive as your OS is preferred. Shouldn't be an issue at all unless the drive where the VST's are on is particularly slow. My VST's are on a different drive to the operating system as I regard VST's more like "data" than applications as I have so many of them, and as they can be shared across other applications other than Sonar.

Sorry to hijack your thread but since you are talking X3 upgrade I thought I'd ask. I just purchased the upgrade from X2 and the download links include Dim Pro 1.5 along with loops and one shots (3 parts) and the Dim Pro 1.5 expansion pack. Are these the same files from X2 in other words do I only need the four X3 parts and the Addictive drums download? Thanks guys.

Correct, if you have loaded the DimPro 1.5 and One Shots already, those are the same between X3 and X2. No need to re-install them. FYI - The AD download is actually via their (XLN) online installer. You need to create an account on the XLN site and claim your redemption code from the CW store.
