twisted6s I'm going with the Audio Technica ATH-M50's Thank you kind sirs. I'll report back my comments after I've used them. The ATH-M50's are respectable. I think you will find them adequate for tracking and for checking mixes after you have checked them in your other monitors. I own ATH-M50's and HD280's; I prefer the former as they are more comfortable for longer projects or late at night. The HD280's are too tight and create some ear pain/fatigue. I still use them just to hear what the mix sounds like in a different speaker/headphone. I do plan on getting Beyerdynamics as they feel so comfortable and sound nice.

I've been very happy with Stax Lambda Pros for several decades. They still perform flawlessly.

benjaminfrog I know you already made your choice, twisted6s, but for anyone who's interested in a comparison of a number of worthy contenders, here's a great article from Sound On Sound: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan10/articles/studioheadphones.htm I went with the DT880s based on this article and have been very pleased with them.
great review-thanks Mr Frog

Muziekschuur at home Get some Sennheiser HD201's aswell. They are 20 euro a piece. And they sound really nice... Just to have a spare... I had to LOL at this thread because it seems the 'best' phones are the ones any particular individual seems to be using rather than any convincing consensus. I guess phones are a very personal thing which is why I'd advocate listening to as many as you care to. I like this recommendation above though for a general purpose pair that you wont need to get too precious over. They are great for tracking because there is so little bleed and I've even turned out quite a few mixes successfully on these little babies. At that price they are great to break out for family and friends too. See if you can get your dealer to throw a pair in with your main purchase.

twisted6s Thank you Ben, but your article only confirms my purchase Glad to hear it. I wasn't suggesting that you get the DT880s, just that the article was helpful to me in making a decision and I thought others might find it helpful as well.

Beyer DT100s are probably not the best sounding headphones in this line-up, but they are one of the most abuse resistant...
