Healing Is In You Hands..1st takes.
A little rundown on how this came about... I was at rehearsal at my church and I had pulled this song for the group. It was new to some of them and one of the members recommended I do it as a "special number" to get people accustomed to a new song. I decided to take them up on that suggestion. The night before I was to play it I said to myself....might as well track it while I'm going through it. So I armed a track with the Sampletekk Old Lady piano and grabbed the nearest mic that worked and would fit in my stand. I tracked both the piano and my vocal in one pass. That only took about 10 minutes. Then later on I spent over 2 hours adding another vocal some string parts and wrote some automation.Added a bus for the FX reverb. I am open to any suggestions on it. I am using Valhallas 64 bit reverb plug-in . https://soundcloud.com/st...aling-is-in-your-hands

I tried to listen but , again, soundcloud did not play for me. I just listened to one on soundcloud before I tried to listen to yours. I don't know why soundcloud just works intermittently for me. It requires a total reboot to get it to work once it won't play something. I'll try that later. Sorry.

Nice job. I'd drop the strings a few db. They seemed to be rally loud and overpowering. Aside from that, I like it. Simple arrangement.

This is a very good song that would benefit from more dynamics and less reverb, though it does sound huge. Other than that, well done!

Bapu- Thanks for listening. I'll look at reducing that compression. Pug- Thanks for the attempt . I had a lot of problems with soundcloud on IE. Mark- Thanks for dropping on by for a listen and for the kind comments! Herb- I listened on a few different setups before I posted here and I guess because of the differences in systems the strings sounded loud on some and softer on others. Did you listen on your pro setup? I must have an ugly peak in there somewhere. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll look into it further. Thanks for your critique and comments. Lynn- I appreciate your insight here. I think this lines up well with another comment regarding over compression. Thanks!

Well, I think it a beautiful song with a nice message. I have to go along with the other mix comments. However, understanding how you put this together, I think you did a good job. I'm not sure how much you can work with it but some tweeks could help. Again cudos to the songwriters and to you for your performances.

I rarely listen to anything on my "pro setup" since it's not online. I do have a lappy with cans which I could use and do on occasion. Mostly everything I listen to here and in other places is on this computer with the Altec Lansing "came with the computer" speakers. So I compare every mix to the others I hear on this set up.

Good stuff, Star. Unfamiliar with the tune, but the message gets across with your earnest vocal. The stringy thing on the right could use a quick eq cut and some easier release on the keys.

I liked this too Tim and agree with what Frank mentioned regarding the over-compression. A song like this needs to breathe a little more and not stay so straight like it is now. Meaning, you kind of have this going on __________________________ where it would be cool if it were a bit more ____^^^----------------________ in dynamics, if that makes sense? You can get away with more of the ______________ stuff with a rocker or even a pop tune...but this baby needs to breathe. I actually liked the reverb in this. Tunes like this can have a little more verb like you had it in my opinion. I believe the limiter/master compression made the verb a bit more apparent. However, you always want to watch long tails with reverb. If you want a longer tail, it's best to eq the verb by low passing it a bit so it doesn't hiss like a snake and make it sound like you're using more verb than you really are. You're better off using less tail/decay with a shorter decay and a little more verb level believe it or not. It depends on what you're shooting for. You'd be surprised how much verb pro's use these days. But the key is in how they adjust the decay as well as how well it's eq'd...which is VERY important to any reverb....or any effect for that matter. Nice job on this though....considering how you tracked it. I dig your voice too...nice job! It's also good to see you sharing tunes. You've gotten some really good feedback from everyone so far. Keep up the good work. :) -Danny

Very lovely song with a great message of His love. My only critique is I would drop the keyboards back a bit so those great vocals can stand out better than they already are. Nicely done for such a quick take. Peace and Blessings, John

A couple of things could be fixed. Firstly, the second chord in the progression, D/C# doesn't sound good, ESPECIALLY with strings, because of the b9 interval between the C# in the bass and the D in the treble. That chord can work if the bass is quickly passing through the C#, but since it's camped out there for a bit it doesn't sound right. If you change the "D" in treble chord to an "E" it removes the offending dissonance and it creates a little inner-voice movement. Here's an MP3 that'll help you sort that out: http://www.audiorecordingandservices.com/chord_fix.mp3 The string arrangement needs some work. It needs to "go somewhere". Why not start with just the low cellos/basses, maybe bring in a single note higg violin line and then finally get to the full texture in the chorus. I'll also echo the comments of how compressed it sounds.

Have to agree with all the mix comments noted above but then it is a live take and for that it works well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Warren, I have taken the comments to heart and made a few tweaks here and there....I don't think I'm finished yet ;) Herb, The setup you have is probably what the real world listener will use or something similar. I took the strings down a few db. Not in all places but I used automation to get them closer so they hopefully don't over power so much.\ Thanks James, yes I believe I need to think more like a string player when playing string parts on keys.I see what you mean. This probably isn't my last mix on this. I'm closer I think but after uploading it and listening to it I'm hearing things I don't like. I appreciate you listening and commenting. Alkie, yeah man I can see from your avatar that you have done a live thing or two as well. Thanks! John, Thanks. I seem to only have time for "quick takes" lol. Hi Danny, I appreciate your listen and critique here. I think I may have tried in vain to get this right. I might need another go at this. I reduced my mains to -7db and then went into what I thought was a pretty mild setting in Ozone 5.It seemed ok before I uploaded but it's still squashed. Even though I went in with a lower signal I think I still pumped it up too much. I guess I'm going back to the drawing board asap.I'm sorry to take so long getting back to read these. I played with the verb and I think I might have also dried it up too much on the tails. I should have left well enough alone and done as you suggested. I'll follow up with your suggestion. Thanks John, Hopefully my takes in the future will be a little more in depth .I actually tracked through a cobalt guitar mike lol. Walt I appreciate it. Thanks for listening. You might be interested in what I have in the pipes. Thanks Rimshot. I'm not sure how it came out sounding the way it did considering :S jsars, This really has given me something to ponder. I'm going to see what I can do.Thanks! Wookie- As always I am glad you listened and commented. I have been following your recent developements on soundcloud. Good stuff! Hi Bob, wow thanks! Hey Tim - this is sounding like a good start. Reminded me of a Bond theme at first (especially the horns), with a lot of good tension. If you're looking for some ideas... I think it needs a "B" part with some space, and a big drum beat. Maybe some distorted dark harmony vocals a la Daren/MRI? Some big stabby synths. And an explosion or a bit disintegrator or something like that. ;) Looking forward to hearing what you do with it!
