Heaphone Amp

Howdy all.  I am getting my first dedicated headphone amp.  Question about hookup.  Should I go headphone amp into input 3-4 from my Roland Octacapture, then create a buss/send thing in SPLAT for headphones, or should I hook monitors up through my headphone amp?  I am getting the small Presonus HP4 which has a monitor thru input and a monitor mute button on the front.

Any benefit or drawbacks sound wise for either? Thanks in advance

I used to have an Octa-Capture.  I ran my headphone distribution amp from the headphone jack on the front.  Studio monitors to 1L and 2R on the rear panel.   I would mute the studio monitors from the switch on the front panel (if I remember correctly).

However, the main outs (1L and 2R) also work, as the headphone out died in mine and I used the main outs to an external switch for both headphone distribution amp input and monitors and controlled it from the external switch.

Roland wanted too much for the parts, compared to what I paid for it, or I would still have it.  I liked the unit.

It's nice to have a physical control within easy reach. As Jack said if you use the headphone output then you'll have a level control right there instead of fussing inside the software. The benefit is this will work no matter which project or DAW you are using.
Myself I use a Mackie Mix 8 for headphone control and amplification. For the $40 I paid  it does a lot more than a headphone amp can do.

I was concerned that coming out of the Octacapture headphone out (which already amplifies the cans) and then going into another headphone amp would either damage the headphones with too much wattage or possibly just introduce noise or something.  I don't want to amp them twice (I don't think).

I used the headphone out to a 8 channel headphone distribution amp (Behringer Powerplay Pro 8).  I don't think the level really matters.  I set the Octa-Capture output about 30% (an arbitrary level that I used) and the headphone amp I'm using also has an input level control and individual volume controls for each channel.  I'm doing the same thing now with my MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid recording interface unit.

Probably yes. It depends on your setup. I have an Audient iD22's digital outs going into an Aphex 141B DAC and a pair of outs from there going into an Aphex Headpod headphone amplifier.

For what its worth, I went out of Octacapture into the THRU of the headphone amp, then out to monitors.  Works like a charm. Now I have separate controls for both monitors and headphones right on desktop (no fiddling with the software mixer). Unit also has monitor mute button which is nice.

So far it seems to be a great unit if anyone is in the market....

Unit also has monitor mute button which is nice.

Without that feature it would be a major PITA. As it is when I'm using headphones I'm probably not wanting my speakers on. Sounds like a nice set up.

    Sven450,

I too have the Roland Octa-Capture.
I connect My Presonus HP4 headphone amp to the 3/4 out of the Octa Capture.
In CbB, I uses sends to send a copy of all the Music and the Vocalist to a Cue Mix Bus
The Cue Mix Bus is routed to Out 3/4 of the Octacapture
I can then adjust each send level for each of the tracks based on what the vocalist needs to hear more of or less of.
Remember to use Pre Fader sends for the Cue Mix so that the singer can still hear the entire mix in case you want to mute or solo a channel in the control room.

The HP4 is near the singer so they can adjust their own levels and I have everything routed through the original Mackie Big Knob which provides me with 3 separate monitor outputs, 4 separate audio inputs, Mute, Mono, Dim and the ability to speak to the Singer while they are listening to or recording vocals.
