Herb, thanks for the comments on the vox and instruments. If I got paid for for being #1 on soundclick, I’d have to send it back the money as I’m dropping like a rock the last couple of days.

Randy, thanks man. Whenever I hear that I’ve reminded someone of days gone by and brought back some great memories, this puts me on top of the world. It is great to hear your story and to know that we share a similar life experience. I appreciate you letting me know.

Jon, thanks for listening again and again, and for helping to bolster my play numbers on soundclick. Unfortunately my stardom was short lived. I hope Wal-Mart will let me return that case of unused sharpies that I bought earlier in the week.
Jon, Best Wished! Tom

Tom,
Another nice pristine mix! The volume you get is amazing. Nice tune, the vocals were strong and good. I too like that slide guitar. Just a great tune, you don't need to change a thing in my opinion.

Tom: Really enjoyed the song. The mix is very wide and balanced, nice job.

I loved the the refrain and the vocal glide on "just as I aaaaaammm"

Tony, I appreciate the listen and the kind comments. I started working on this song back in January, but when I got the slide the first of July, I'd found the missing element and I was finally able to finish the song. Thanks for noticing the mix too.

Jeffrey, I usually try not to sing a portamento as I hear it overused by some singers as an ad lib, but the style of this song called for it so I wrote them into the melody. It was a new adventure for me, a little outside my comfort zone, but I was pleased with the result. Thanks for commenting on the mix and balance. Thanks for listening and for the feedback on the portamento.

This is very well produced. I really like the instruments and everything seems well balanced. I have listened a couple of times and for me the vocal is a smidge to hot. Just an opinion.

What effects are you using in the on the vocals?

Again the mix is very clear and all the instruments are able to shine. Great job.

Tom, I appreciate the great compliment on the instruments and balance. The vox track fx includes compressor, deesser, saturator, eq, with out to main bus which then includes verb, compresson, eq, followed up with post production eq and sonic maximizer. Thanks for the note and for taking the time to listen several time. Much appreciated.

Tom, thanks for the listen man. I appreciate your comments. One night while I was still working on this project I got off track and actually did a 4 part harmony a cappella version of this song, sounded pretty cool too. I can't seem to find it so I must not have saved the file. I guess I should consider doing some harmonies on this one or at least sometime. Good to hear from you always.

Hi there Tom

Beautiful song - I'm not the biggest fan of the genre but you're kind of twisting my arm a bit with this!

The mix and the performances are from the top drawer as with all of your stuff and the way you sing the lyrics just confirms the fact to me that this stuff comes from deep inside - it's almost like you're letting us have a peek at some of your treasured memories.

I see it made number one above more than 38,000 other country songs on Soundclick and deservedly so - it reminds me a lot of some of the C&W music my dear mum used to listen to when I was a lad and the way artists like Jim Reeves [her favourite] were using the songs as a vehicle to tell a story.

Best wishes

Steve

Hey Tom,
Pretty well done...Do I hear "Real Guitar" in there?
Personally I would like the music bed down a tad, drums up a tad, but this sounds like a country/folk type song,
so your mix may suit that purpose just fine.

thanks for the invite tom

A 50's rockabilly feel
Nice intro/ like the slide / guitars/ piano fills throughout

drums sound underneath
some drum fills sound underneath
there's some SSSing on some words
hi hat and cymbals seem to be in the same freq range as the guitars
pitch at two spots (god) above) (we) see and hear)
Bass could come up a little-(but that just might be my speakers)
Ending cuts off abruptly (last notes don't ring out)

Its a clean open recording
I like your song message and delivery

Maybe a mix without drums (an unplugged version also)
but thats just me and you get a two for 1 on your song

Steve, I greatly appreciate you for taking the time to listen to my song and leave such gracious comments. It really means a lot to know the message and emotion of the story is coming through in my music. That mean way more to me than all the technical stuff, although I still strive to get the best sound I can. I was pretty stocked about the charts. Thanks for stopping in.

Roger, Thanks man! Real Guitar? Yep, RealGuitar2, RealStrat. Good ear. As I've said, no real instruments were used in the making of this song. I've had a couple comments on the drums, have played around with it a little. May change them yet.

Wilson, I appreciate the listen and extensive, thoughtful critique. I'll have to see if I can get away with upping the deess a tab. I actually brought the volume down a little intentionally on the hi hat ad cymbals, maybe I overdid. Sometimes after post production, what sounded right ends up wrong. I'll play around with them. I knew I had a few pitch problems but these weren't the spots. I checked the two pitch spots you mentioned, they look spot on frequency with the written melody when I scope them. The first is a D against a C7 chord, so could just be that. I tested with C or E, but the melody screams for the D there. The second is A against Fmaj7 chord so should sound okay. Scopes out okay, probably just my forces tonality in those spots. On the bass, I used to be ALL bass, so I may be compensating a little for past sins. Funny you mentioned the unplugged version, I actually considered an acappella version at one time while struggling with the accompaniment. I appreciate your astute observations and the honest critique. Very helpful. I appreciate your kind compliments too.

Shad, appreciate you brother. Thanks for listening and taking the extra moment to add a note. This is the genre I'd like to do more of, but it was definitely a stretch for me to get it done. It probably is not really my natural genre, just one I thought I should try since I now live in Oklahoma and all.

Duane, Dinner on the ground? That reminds me of a song I used to do on my banjo years ago – All day singin’ and supper on the ground, Pa gave Ma a friendly hug an’ Junior swallowed a lightnin’ bug! Billy Ray got a spankin’ for stealin’ Judy’s cake. But he don’t care, he’s padded there. Well, it’s the 25th annual Hollow Grove Sunday School all day picnic… Thanks for the very kind and complimentary comments.

Mark, nice sentiment and good to hear that said about my music. As for the sound, just keep lurking about on this forum and keep posting your songs here for critique and you'll amaze yourself. Some of the folks with a lot more experience than I, some even with their own studios will give invaluable tips. Good luck. It was good to hear from you.

Hi Tom,

Another great song. Again with the vocals that really follow and work off the chords. Sounds nice and clear. What did you use for the instruments? The overall songwriting is really great. You know I grew up in the city and we had wonderful church communities of all kinds and had great times and memories but I'm sure yours was a much different experience. When you visit a state in this country you tend to go see the natural wonders or the biggest cities (At least I do). You really don't take a tour of the churches and the communities(again, At least I don't). This song really makes me think about what it was like growing up in your neck of the woods. A nice side to a great type of American family lifestyle in the early sixties. The lyrics really paint a picture.

Funnily enough, I actually thought about this when I first heard your vocal take on this particular track. I'd be really interested to hear something in that vein with your voice I can picture it, and it sounds like a good prospect.

Michael, thanks! Glad you left a note. I appreciate the kind comments. I hope this is my groove. I’d certainly like to do more country genre music.

Mark, Even though I grew up in a small town in northeastern Colorado, those days (1960’s) were much the same for many all across this country, and perhaps even elsewhere around the world. For instruments my typical line up is Broomstick, Jamstix, TruePianos, RealStrat and RealGuitar. Glad to hear I jogged a few fond memories with this one.

Jon
, I’ll have to see if I can get an a cappella version thrown together one of these days. I don’t know, it might sound a little cheesy, but it would be fun just the same. I’ll see what I can do.

Ed, It means a lot to me having someone of your level of professionalism say this. I appreciate you for taking the time to listen and the nice comment. Make’s me feel pretty good. Thanks man.

^^^To me THIS particular song is great as it is and didn't get the No1 spot by accident.^^^

The reason I mentioned this was because in this song it was evoking memories in the back of my mind of an Irish Vocal outfit from my childhood that actually outsold the Beatles during '64/65 here in the UK.

They were called the Bachelors and yeah, they were complete chunks of cheese on a mozzarella base with cheese sauce on top and sprinkled with Parmesan, but I reckon the vocal range and style of harmonies would sit right in your park. And as you've successfully kept this particular song out of the City Limits of Cheezville with a great contemporary vibe and with your great spirit of fun I reckon you'd do a brilliant job with a similar vocal harmony piece.

Anyway this is all from the FWIW dept. I'm just tossing an idea around as it struck me at the time, so blow it outta the water by all means.

So turn your cringe shield up fully, and give it up for those guys that were outselling John, Paul, George and Ringo....I give you the Bachelors...(I think they are having a hard time keeping straight faces too)

Jon, I watched the whole video and didn't see a bit of "Sunshine". It only rains about once a year here in Guymon Oklahoma Panhandle USA, so this video was quite intriguing for me to watch. Dumb question - why DO they call it the Sunshine South Coast, other than its obvious geographical location (south coast), is it usually sunny there (sunshine)?

I think its called irony, the local tourist boards use the term because of it having the highest average, but all that means probably is 5 days out of the year as opposed to 4...

Mostly overcast and miserable, I'm glad the climate doesn't reflect in my personality...

Mind you we've had a couple of months of nice weather this year I've even managed a tan, After the winter I was blue now I'm a healthy shade of beige.

Well then, that explains it Jon. On that 5th day every year you have 100% more sunshine than the rest of the country. Just for the fun of it, I've added a view of beautiful downtown Guymon from the now world famous Guymon Cam. As the sun is rising on the western hemisphere, I see a few cirrus clouds in the sky (not to be confused with serious clouds).

I'm wondering if Jack has any beige indulgences for sale.

Janet, Our son flew back from a seminar in Austin today, so we drove into Amarillo to pick him up from the air port. It actually rained a little bit during the drive home. Not here in Guymon of course, but it did rain between here and there. We could see the clouds building and then we saw the rain streaks in the sky, we drove another 30 miles up the road before we first saw any wet pavement. You really can see just about forever here.

Gordo
, I appreciate you listening and for adding a note about the song. A very kind comment and I am happy that you could hear the emotion coming through in my voice. Thank you.

So glad to have you dropped in Larry. Did you make it home or are you still in Phoenix? I hope the new job is going well for you. It means a great deal to me to hear so many nice comments from everyone. And when someone who is as accomplished as you says such nice things about my music, it really feels great! Very much appreciated.

Jan, That's neat to hear about your mom having been in a similar situation as mine. Thank you for the wonderful comment.
