Heard 34 years ago today

What are you doing in the bathroom so long?  Smells like something died in there.

Elvis - died 34 years ago today.  Or did he?

I noticed he hadn't been doing so much lately.

That leaves just two of the original Beatles left then?

I calculate that to be roughly 4 Monkees in new currency.

Some people remember exactly where they were and what they were doing on, say, the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated...as do I.  But I also remember this date...weirdly...because I was on the set of the Grizzly Adams TV show out in the woods of Utah.  We were touring out of Nashville and had been invited to see the show filmed by one of the co-stars...Denver Pyle, who played the patriarch Mr. Darlin on the Andy Griffith show.  Just before we heard the news that Elvis had died the bear attacked Dan Haggerty (star of the show) and caused quite a ruckus on the set.  I think he knew.

Hold on.  Did anyone ever see Elvis in the same room as that bear at the same time?  Hmmm.

I think I may have a new conspiracy theory churning...

I remember it vividly - I was only 5, and that was the first time someone I "knew" died.

Back then, when people asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, my answer was : I will be Elvis. It sort of messed up my plans and my whole world when he died.

The country gal singing "star" (haw haw) that we were touring with at the time announced on the way back to Salt Lake City that afternoon that Elvis's passing meant she HAD to attend the funeral...which she did...giving us about a three day vacation in Salt Lake City.  Have you ever tried to "vacate" in Salt Lake City??

When Elvis died, my then-future mate was traveling by car, with family, through Tennessee. In those days the only musical entertainment in most family cars was the radio. Guess what the airwaves were like right then.

Working. In fact driving right by where my current workplace would be built 27 years later.
Company van didn't have a radio (or air conditioner!) and I was listening to the local Top 40 AM station on one of those horrible little transistor radios.
I was never a big Elvis fan but I liked his stuff when I heard it. Still, that kind of news seems to leave an indelible mark on your memory, especially when it's someone who, by their mere doing of something, brings that something to a wider audience and helps grease the wheels of change.

Well, in one sense I know where I was, just not where I was!  The flags went from half-mast to full-mast on the day I was born (12/22/1963).

I have a friend who's a die-hard Elvis fan (and one of those that's not really sure he's dead) so I told him I went to Graceland to see Elvis, but they wouldn't let me in with my shovel...
