"Hearts On Fire"

I finished this mix right at the end of December.  Couldn't resist the sound effects at the end.  Might be a tad bass shy.  I have treated my walls with acoustic foam since then but wanted to get your feedback on this before I remix.  Hope you enjoy.

Nope, mix sounds spot on to me. I did indeed enjoy. This has a summer party fun feel to it that kinda made me feel at home... dunno if that makes any sense.

Thanks much Shad!  Glad you liked it.  It is fun loving.  The canons were tongue in cheek so to speak (is that possible?).  Anyway, I appreciate that the mix sounds good to you.

I like the super clean arrangement and the way it lets the mix breathe.

I also like the song form.

Maybe push the bass forward during the guitar solo? Something happens and the mix seems to step backward during the solo. Seems like it should pop forward just a bit.

    best regards,

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks for the nice comments.

I guess all the musicians stepped back when I started playing the solo!  Yikes, I need to work harder on my chops!

I will check that out.  Maybe it was my master stereo compression doing that.  Much appreciated.

It is bass shy for sure.

But I do like the "Hurts So Good" type energy.

I would trim the vocal eq by a few dbs at 600hz

I like it, I'm not a huge fan of that kick drum. It needs to be tighter and or have less room or something. Running with a heart on (fire) sounds uncomfortable.  (for those about to rock... WE SALUTE YOU!)

I think the bass is plenty loud, but there's no "thump". I'd suggest working on getting more low end on the kick so the beat stands out more. The rest of the mix is fine.

You can either layer a heavier kick over the original and blend to taste, or use the Percussion Channel and Renaissance Bass to pump up your original kick. The latter assumes that your kick is on it's own track.

    Regards,
    Dan

Timidi - thanks for the smiley face!  Did you like the guitars playing?

Robby - I appreciate the comments.  I am struggling with that kick but many times I prefer some kind of room on it and that's probably what is distracting in this song.

Dan - much thanks for your input.  Good tip on layering (something I seldom do!).  Still lot's to learn.

Still no comments on the silly canon fire.  Maybe I need to bring that up in the mix more or it is such a bad idea you guys don't want to comment on it!

Catchy tune. I like it, but the bass could be much more pronounced for my taste for more punch.

I usually use the "real bass," either fingered or picked, from Dimension Pro, and then usually run that through a bass cab modeler, like in Guitar Rig, or something, to give it more of a natural feel.

    Fun song Jimmy.

    Great mix.

Not sure I like the BGVs on "Hearts on fire" but that's a taste thing. To me they need some high voices (falsetto?) in there. And I would have gone for a melody line instead of the shouts.

Is it just me? It sounds like you're saying "I'm running with a hard on fire" in the chorus. And I'm not joking around on this.

Other than those minor nits, I really liked the song. I give it a 95. I could understand (most of) the words and I could dance to it.

I love this song for its upbeat and feel good vibe.  I agree that it's a little bass shy, but that's all.  If you have the PC2A compressor, try running the bass through that and see if it doesn't do the job.  All in all, this rocks.

    All the best,

Jimmy, this was most definitely kicking some serious butt over the pc speakers on my end, and apologies that those speakers limit my ability to offer any fine level crits.  FWIW- It did sound a little bass light on the small speaks.

Really catchy tune... well written and performed.  Excellent job, man!

Hi Ed - Much thanks for your listen and the "95"!  The song was for fun so the Bkg Vocs at the end saying "Fire" were something I couldn't resist.  No comments on the silly canon? :(  I wonder if ya'll took it seriously?

Lynn - thanks for the nice comments!

Lappy speakers here, but sounds pretty good all the same - nice balance and clarity. Can't be sure if the bass needs a boost or not given the listening environment, but the kick could use a little more oomph/thump for me, but then I guess the same applies as with the bass.
