Heavens Angel ( new mix)
This one has been setting on the back burner since the summer. Essentially an experiment in minimalist songwriting. Bass, and more importantly, the kick could come up a bit. The mix is pretty bright and feels like the bottom is, more or less, missing.
Haven't heard a country song with accordion since I left Texas years (almost 30 years) ago, so this has a very retro feel, to me anyway.
Lead vocal is framed nicely by all of the other elements. BGV could stand to come up just a little. Very clean and open mix overall.

Sounds like a mix of the Mavericks and JD Souther:) Very good song and overall performance. I agree with Dan that it seems bright and lacking some bottom end..... like HPF is setting too high. Otherwise, the mix is good. Had a couple listens.....excellent song...

Nice one Herb.
Bass needs more tonal definition IMO. Like Dan said the drums seem lost in the mix.

Very good.... Thanks for the comments and crits. Seems I should probably have a look at the bass and low end kick and examine those issues in a bit more detail.

Nice song!
Overall it reminds me a bit of 70's era Eagles, well, except for the accordion. But that really works well.
Mix-wise it's all been covered so nothing to add there.. the balance is good IMO.

Great guitar playing (as always). Your vocals almost sound like Willie to me on this one. The accordion was the cherry on top of this tune .... Reminds me of the live version of Bad Weather by Poco. The Bass sounds fine, but I'm guitarist as well. A little more kick might be the ticket.

I am listening to Christmas tunes this morn and hit on this one. After all, Angels are a big part of Christmas.  This is like a lot of your tunes, they just get in your head, like a lot of country/western music. We have had many discussions over the years about how you mix your tunes. They always sound professionally done but a bit "thin" to me. It's not a crit as much as an observation. The song and the production is beautiful and I could use a couple angels if you could send them this way. Maybe they could help with that song we are writing, FOR TWO OR THREE YEARS. It'll get there. This year I'm thinking! Merry Christmas, buddy.

excellent, Herb! the drums seem a little lacking in the low end. I hear the bass good and it sounds great, but I can't hardly hear a kick at all and all of the drums sound "high passed" I would prefer a little less verb on the vox, too. they sound like they have a lot more verb than everything else. good job!

Really good song Herb. I like it the way it is. Bass is strong on my system. Yeah the kick could be up a hair but that doesn't really impact the overall quality of the song. Sometimes we get way too much in the technical instead of just experiencing the song. Heck, and other times we say everythings great when it's not!
I always start with the song. If the song is good and something in the production detracts from it, then I like to comment. If the song is not good, then I don't think it matters too much. Just MO.
Anyway, I like what you are doing and want to hear more.

I would suggest that if you were to enhance the low end that it be a moderate adjustment. Not just because that's the popular advice to give, but because I think the stronger high end presence is what captures the mood of this genre. I can hear a lot of interesting high end dynamics that I would hate to hear masked by low end boost. Of course, this is all of my opinion (do I still have to give that disclaimer in every post or have we all acknowledged the subjectivity of music tastes?).
Great work and great vocals! This is my first time hearing one of your tracks. I enjoyed it.

Accordion to me, you did a pretty good job.
Did you fix the bass guitar? Sounds fine by me, and as mentioned, bass isn't really featured in this type of music anyway. You just have to hear it a little through the jukebox speakers that you are crying on as you lean on it. :)
I think the mix sounds pretty darn good! I'd bring the kick drum up as others have said,
and less reverb on the vocals (but overly reverbed vocals are a staple of the genre here - I'm thinking late '70's c & w)
The thing that started bugging me was the omnipresent and uni-volumed hi hats and cymbals, I think if they came down a bit, it would bring the vocal out front some.
Those are all just niggles anyway, it sounds pretty together as it is. Good one!

Herb, solid tune here for sure. Glad this one made it to the finish line. I think you hit the mark, very interesting tune but not overly saturated with instrumentation. Very tasty, congrats on another gem! Mix sounds great on this end.

Really nice balance across the whole song. Has some very dreamy moments too. I'm siding with the other about the bass, but most importantly the kick drum. I can't tell if it's there or not, I think my brain is adding it to where I think it should be.
Beautiful track though, just needs a few tweaks.

Herb, I hear a lot of Neil Young in your voice which is the center of this song. I don't hear much low end, however, which makes your vocal seem a bit thin. The accordion is lovely, and the guitar parts are well written but could also be a bit louder. This song is so good that I know there's a stellar mix there waiting to happen. I look forward to hearing this again. Have a good year!

New mix is up. A few minor changes. Mostly I took the reverbs out of a few places that should allow more definition on the lower end. Slight boost to the kick and bass freqs... not much. Bass may be a tad too loud now... and the snare too. Vocals are great and fit in the mix perfect. Accordian stays out of the way of the vocals nice (and out of the dumpster too!!)...
oops...what happened at 1:28...like a weird tape splice??

yeah bass is a tad loud. Ya know..an upright might fit in best, over the generic P bass sound you've got.

Sounds really good. You have a hiccup @ 1:28, something must have popped into your rendering process.
If anything at this point I might just pull back the bass guitar a hair, and push the kick a little bit. Like to hear a little more thump to carry the beat and pull the song along, but, much better mix for certain. Very good song.
