Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart) Ricky Nelson cover by Daryl Crowley and Markno999

Here is a fun, upbeat Ricky Nelson cover of Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart).  I asked Daryl Crowley to collaborate on a song after hearing his rendition of Travelin Man (another Ricky Nelson song) and we settled on Hello Mary Lou.   This version has a country spin on it.    Daryl did all the vocals, lead and backing, along with the lead guitar solo and the final mastering.   I provided rhythm guitars, drum and percussion arrangement and bass.   Hope you enjoy.  It was a lot of fun working on it.

I must have played that song a gazillion times.  You guys did a pretty fair rendition here. Reminds me of my old American Legion gigs.

Ed - Thank you for having a listen.   I appreciate your comment.  Maybe I can talk Daryl into doing another song;)

Tim - It was a fun tune, have heard a lot of different versions of this song from Ricky Nelson to Led Zeppelin and tried to give it a little unique flair.  Hopefully succeed at that.  Thanks for listening.

Scott - The only thing missing in this song is a fiddle;)   Maybe next time?  Thanks for the comment.

Don't know the original but enjoyed this a lot, the groove is so natural and the sound is pristine.

Mark, do you play the drums yourself (acoustic/vdrum...)?

    Good job men,

    Cian,

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it.   I don't play the drums, unfortunately I lack the coordination though I have tried many times.  I use Superior Drummer and this song also includes EZDrummer Latin for the percussion.  I usually start with a basic beat I like from the MIDI Libraries included with the Toontrack stuff and then expand from there to fills etc..  The MIDI's are played by real drummers so have some nice dynamics and other nuances baked in already.

On the overall performance, Daryl's vocals really brought the backing track to life.  The rhythm tracks went through several iterations after I heard the vocal tracks and improved quite a bit based on the vocal performance

Excellent job gentlemen.  Excellent playing, vocals, and sound.  I particularly appreciate the fact that you really stuck to the good version (Ricky Nelson's) .  Was that Jame Burton playing lead guitar on this number???

Panu - Thanks for the comment.    Glad you liked it.

Freddy - Thanks, this version is by far my favorite too (the Ricky Version)  Daryl will have to comment on the lead guitar part, he may be related to James Burton, not sure, but he sounds like it other than Burton playing a Telecaster;)

Herb - Thank you.  The steel guitar, I forgot to comment on it in the original post.   The steel part was generated by a friend of mine using the newer Band-In-A-Box version that has real instruments.   Gave him the tempo and key and got various steel parts in a .wav that I dispersed throughout for decoration.  I think it came out pretty well.   I had no idea that program had gone so far forward since I last heard about it.

that was an interesting take on it, I didn't expect the steel guitar. The composition seemed more laid back than the original too. I'm looking forward to getting my audio jack fixed so I can listen in the cans again, but I enjoyed what I could hear. I also have a bluegrass version of this song on vinal by the Seldom Scene :-)

Thanks guys.  There are several Ricky Nelson tunes that I've wanted to do.  I had just posted Travelin Man when Mark asked me to help out on this.  And since this was also one of the ones I've wanted to do, I was all for it.

I used to play this on the road and we did it a lot like this based on the Loggins & Messina cover.

Mark did a great job putting all this together, I just had the easy fun part.  Thanks to Mark for giving me the opporutnity!

Great job, fellas. Ironically, like Scotty, I used to play this in an American Legion. I like the fiddle in yours. Here's a version of it I recorded about 3 years ago: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8355609 Of the two, yours is a much cleaner mix. Each track sharp and distinct. Well done, lads.

    Hey,

Another great remake cover version from you!

Excellent job by both of you.  The instruments and playing sound terrific, Daryl's vocals are perfect, and the mix sounds like pro modern country.

PS: As I mentioned in my own last thread, Markno, I think your remake of "No Matter What" was definitely one of the best covers ever posted on the forum, and this is another great addition.

    Really nice work, boys!

Janet - Better late than never getting to the party;)  Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed it.

Mark - Enjoyed your version too, thanks for posting the link and appreciate the comment.   So many ways to play a good old song like this one.  I like how Queen used to play this song live, Led Zeppelin's version and of course Ricky's version and countless others.

Bob - Thank you.   I have to say it was really Daryl's vocal that brought this to life, after his vocal tracks came through I had to step up my game on the rest of the backing track and it kind of morphed into this version.   Thanks for the comment on No Matter What.  That was a fun tune too.
