Building a sound library

Would you think the following vst's would be all that is needed for just about any type of music creation (excluding synths and effects)
Garritan World Instruments
Garritan Personal Orchestra 4
EastWest Ministry of Rock 2
EastWest Fab Four Virtual Instruments Collection
List any that you think I should check out
ALSO,
any really good free vst synths (vintage to present types of real synths hardware)
List any that you think I should check out

Your list is definitely incomplete if you really want to tackle 'any' type of music styles.

So far you have four sample based libraries listed. Nice choices that will cover some ground, but you need some synths as well.

Go to KVR and do a search for analog, additive, granular, modular, hybrid, physical modelling, FM synth and see what stikes your fancy. Try the KVR instrument search:
    http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php

There are synths that tackle multiple synthesis types in one. Making it easy to experiment without having to spend a lot of money on different synths. Have a look at Zebra, Alchemy, Tassman, ElectraX, Helix, to name but a few.

When it comes to freeware, the choice is also great. For vintage synts have a look at Annti's ASynth (donationware), TAL's NoiseMaker, the Electrostudio bundle, perhaps Synth 1 as it has a huge collection of soundbanks. For modern stuff: Oatmeal, Jeremy Ever's Atlanits, Krakli's stuff, Anti's Augur (Donationware), String Theory, HG Fortune synths for some spaced out psychedelia...seriouly get on that KvR intrument search and have fun!

    That's a nice start...
I'd think about adding the following
    • Ivory -  high quality acoustic piano source
    • Omnisphere - incredibly good/versatile for synth sounds
    • Komplete 7 - covers so much territory (includes Kontakt, FM8, Reaktor, Absynth, GuitarRig, etc)
    • Your favorite dedicated drum sample plugin/library

I'm pretty sure there's very good samples of those "country sounds" made for Kontakt (part of Komplete 7)......and Kontakt is one of the best instruments with all kinds of 3rd party developers making good quality sounds.

East West Complete Composer Edition is on sale atm, that is probably the most complete package on the market for overall aucostic sounds.

Add NI Komplete (Kontakt + Battery + Massive + FM8 + Absynth will give you enough synthetic/base sounds to play with) and U-He Zebra for a general synth and you should be good to go. ;)

Don't underestimate what comes with Sonar though. Dimension Pro and Z3TA are both brilliant.

    Hi sgotr:

If you have SONAR 8 or a more recent version of SONAR, and if you're not a Bass player or Guitar player, I would add 3 things to the list you posted in the 1st post.

    1) Native Instrumets' Komplete 5, 6, or 7 (There's so much that comes with this!)

    2) Musiclab RealStrat and/or RealGuitar

    3) Spectrasonics Trillian (greatest Bass sound collection in a softsynth in my opinion and reasonably priced!)

I find that Komplete 7, BFD 2 and bundled synths cover pretty much everything for me. As has been mentioned, i think we forget how great some of the bundled stuff is with Sonar - I use Dim Pro very frequently, and z3ta is brilliant.

You'd be wise to start with Komplete 7 - unbelievable value and some top notch stuff included. On that note, NI must surely have shifted in the 100s of thousands of K7 units? Almost everyone I speak to in pro audio has got it. Sure, their profit margin may not be as large as their competitors, but I get the feeling they are just dominating the market with K7?

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

    Re:Help - Building a sound library - Help 2011/03/16 14:00:54 (permalink)
Another Komplete recommendation here.  Plus Kontakt is very powerful and there are tons of great sound libraries out there. I recommend sonicouture and hollow sound for some of the more esoteric stuff.  But there are tons of great sample libraries.  But the tweakability of Kontakt is amazing.  Cant speak for some of the other sample play back stuff.  I also own the Sample Tank stuff from IK and while it is good, it is not Kontakt.  The Miroslav Orchestra is nice though.  And while Dim Pro gives you flexibility, it is not Kontakt (though I dont think that was the target market).

I have Fab Four and I am not happy with it.  Ditto with some of my other EW stuff.  They do a very good job with their samples but you are stuck with their player and usually the libraries are small relative to their costs.

Tonehammer looks cool.  I am going to end up losing a bunch more money now

As for recreations of vintage stuff, I love the GMedia stuff.  Great Mellotron.  Great Oscar.  Great Minimoog.  Great String Machine.

Sometimes AAS runs specials. They have a great electric piano (lounge lizard) that is very tweakable.  They also have a massive modular environment that sounds awesome, though it does take a bunch of CPU HP to use a lot of.

Arturia does a good job on recreating classic synths such as JP8, Moog Modular, ARP 2600, Prophet 5/V...  Not free by any sense.  But nice.

$ for $ though, I think my favorite is Camel Audio's Alchemy.  It is perhaps the most well thought out modern synth on the market.  It does pretty close to everything.  And it is rock solid stable.

SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc.  Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad.  2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1.  More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent.  Zendrum!!!

Yet another Komplete 7 & Kore 2 user here.  I have also added Evolve Mutations & Mutations 2 to my arsonal, they work well for soundtrack work as well as adding a sinister/goth feel to anything you are working on.

My next addition will be the NI Balinese Gaimlan expansion pack.  Some very exotic sounds in there.

Almost forgot I also have GMedia's MTron Mellotron VST.  It is a remarkable vintage sounding piece of software.

    Hi sgotr

What I have found most useful.

From East West, their Symphonic Orchestra, Silk, RA, and Goliath.

From Native Instruments, Guitar Rig 4 and Battery. Kontakt is useful for third party libraries. I don’t find the Kontakt samples as useful as those from East West.

EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer is also quite useful.

Your best bet is the East West composers collection as someone already suggested. Choose 7 and away you go. You won’t regret it.

It is also worthwhile to buy Komplete as buying components separately is not really cost efficient.

In addition to Battery, EZ drummer or Superior drummer will also be an asset.

With the above there will be quite a lot to call upon as you work through your music projects.

Remember a lot depends upon which instruments you play and what your budget is.

I have found good free vst’s at this site http://www.vst4free.com/

    Regards John

Buy the Balinese Gamelan from SonicCouture instead. The one they make for NI is stripped down from the full version available here:

    http://www.soniccouture.com/en/products/11-balinese-gamelan/

Of course it is more expensive ($255 vs. $69) but the sample set is 24GB, and really does a better job covering the variety of instruments that make Gamelan sound so interesting.

For the OP, as far as Celtic Instruments go, I have a collection from Big Fish Audio that does a good job:

    http://www.bigfishaudio.com/detail.html?4;16;1:::::::::Celtic:350

I am a NI Komplete user also, and I think Battery 3 does a good job on drums, and it syncs nicely with NI Maschine too. Of course it seems you can never have enough drums, and Purrfect Audio's Brushes come in handy for some of the quieter stuff.  Jim Roseberry can tell you about his well executed drum and brush samples.

    Enough for now,
    Paul

Getting a vocal library  can be hard depending on what you want. Check this out though: http://www.soundsonline.com/Voices-Of-Passion

If you have seen the movie Gladiator (composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard), the soundtrack to that is commonly referened as similar to the library.

Would suggest Kore 2 first, then Komplete 7 at a later time.

Both are excellent, but I find myself going to Kore 2 first every time for sound design.

Just a word caution, if you're using Win7 x64 with SONAR X1, save your work frequently, and be prepared for untimly crashes. That said, they're still worth it.

Thanks Eyes. I found a sample at tere site that sounds close to what I'm looking for it's Catching The Sky. Also, had a look at Symphonic Choirs - couldn't find any samples but checked out one of their tutorial videos

I have many of the sample libraries and instruments mentioned and agree that they are worthy of inclusion in a well rounded sound library.
I've not seen Yellow Tools Independence Pro Suite 3 mentioned. It has a 70 gig library of samples and includes fx as well.
