(Help) How to Run Amplitube 3 or Guitar Rig 3 or 4 in Sonar 8

Hey guys,

I just installed Producer 8 on my new computer. I've used the program before but never used the amp sim programs before.

I just installed Amplitube 3 and Guitar Rig 3 and 4. When useing there standalone players they work perfect I set up a sound and when I play I hear the tone I want.

So I tried recording it though Sonar 8 and it only slightly works. I add a track and insert a Audio fx -> vst -> Amplitube. So it pops up and play some guitar. But I hear no distortion just a clear guitar. Then when I record I record hearing only clear guitar but when I play back its all distorted like I wanted.

Can anyone help me? I'd like to hear the amp sound during my playing not after I hope this is an easy problem to fix.

Thanks everyone.

To explain a bit better, it seems as though the guitar gets recorded through sonar first, then the Amplitube effects are applied after the recording is finished.

I would like it to be processed through Amplitube first and then recorded through Sonar with the applied effects so I can hear what I'm really doing.

    Thanks again!

Are you using hardware monitoring perhaps?  That'd explain why you're hearing a clean guitar when recording, but the processed sound when playing back the recording.

You need to make sure that you're monitoring the sound after it's gone through Sonar, not at the hardware interface.

    Hi Wolfos9,

On the track you have inserted the Amp sim on, hit the input echo button, it will turn yellow, you will now see activity on the input meter and also you SHOULD be able to hear it.

Just as an aside - Be aware also, that your recording input level is controlled by the amp sim NOT using the volume slider, you will use this after the event to mix what you have recorded.

Out of interest, if you're hearing the guitar with the input echo off does this mean that hardware monitoring is on?

In my system, if input echo is off, then I hear nothing.

    TIA :-)

That would be right, I can hear using my hardware direct monitoring with input echo off, just not with the effect of the amp, ie a clean sound.  Input echo on, I can hear the Amp sim too.

That seems like normal operation. If you want to hear an effect in soanr while recording, input echo should be enabled.

Yup, you guys are all correct, I checked and it was Echo. I turned it on and could hear it fine. I'm new so I don't know what hardware monitoring is or how to turn it on or off. Things seem to be good now though.

Latencey is a bit of a problem, I have Sonar set to as fast as it can be and there is still a slight delay from me playing to it getting recorded. I use a presonus audiobox and I'm not sure if there is another way to make the latency better. I might switch to a 5ft patch chord and see.

Yeah, and don't forget the length of your headphone cable....

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

There are two main things to watch for when you want good (low) latency for recording.

    1) The buffer setting for your interface. For a Presonus unit this is found in the driver app. 128 buffers willl normaly be fine, if your computer can handle 64 buffers without drop outs, crckling, etc. then even better.  Hardware latency = number of buffers / sample rate + a small fixed amount that varies by manufacturer.  So in general 128 buffers @ 96k will give you half the latency of 128 buffers @ 48k

    2) Make your DAW do as little work as possible while you record.  Reverbs (especially ones that use IRs) can use a lot of cpu time.  Get in the habit of having a "tracking mode" and a "mixdown mode".  In tracking mode do not add any un-nessacery fx and freeze any tracks you have already recorded that use fx. All input is recorded "dry" and the fx applied on playback, so 10 tracks of guitar using Guitar Rig = 10 instances of Guitar Rig = more latency added by Sonar.  Freezing each track before you start on another means you're only ever using one instance of GR.
When you're done recording you can unfreeze everything and the added latency does not matter.

Bare in mind that in air, sound travels at approx 1 foot / 1ms. Playing live into an amp that is just 10 feet away will give you instant 10ms latency, so don't get too anal about trying to reduce latency in your DAW to anything much below this, it just isn't worth it.
