Help! Midi not recognised by sonar x1 nor windows 8

I have gotten the sonar x1le version a few months ago and I want to use my keyboard, but it isn't compatible with windows 7 or 8(so i cant use the usb port) I'm using a Quad-Capture box from Roland; my mic works fine its only my keyboard that isn't working.

    Welcome to the forum.

Can you see your MIDI keyboard if you go to Edit->Preferences->MIDI->Devices?

If you can't see it here it probably means that you need to install the driver for the device.  What brand and model of keyboard are you trying to use?

    Welcome to the forum.
If you're connecting the keyboard to the Roland with MIDI cables, you won't see the Keyboard listed as an option to select, you will see the Quad Capture. Select the Quad Capture as your MIDI Device under Preferences.

Ah ok, but it still doesn't work it's on and the cable is new, it just won't play, you see my mic is also connected via Roland box, and it worked fine it's just the keyboard. Thanks for answering

Since I'm new to sonar how would you set up a track for it is it the sof synths that you have to insert?

To play MIDI in audible form, you need a MIDI track, a soft synth and an audio track.
The MIDI tracks output is to the soft synth, and the audio tracks input is the soft synth.
If you insert the soft synth via Synth Rack, all the routing is automatically created. Chose the "First synth audio output" option in the dropdown.

There's also the "Simple Instrument Track" option, but I recommend you leave it unchecked and start with separate tracks to understand the procedure. I don't know which soft synths are included in LE, though.

There's a tutorial about using soft synths (it used to be #4, not sure about today)
The frustrating thing with LE is the manuals and tutorials refer to things that don't exist in LE-version.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

First, you really do need to spend some time looking at the on-line help and reviewing the manual.  There is an incredible amount of information here and the video tutorials on-line are exceptional.

There are two parts to what you are trying to do.  First, there is a sequencer.  the sequencer says to play note values at specific times.  Your keyboard provides note values and times using the MIDI protocol.  The first action then is to insert a MIDI track and set the input for the MIDI track to point to your keyboard. When you record your playing for a MIDI instrument what you will be doing is saving the notes and sequences in the MIDI track (not the synth track).

This in itself will not make any sounds.  The next part that you need is a synthesizer.  Synths are audio devices and thus need to have an audio track.  When you insert a synth into the track view, Sonar does this by creating an audio track with the synth being an effect on the track (although it may look differently).

Then you need to take the output from the MIDI track that you set up for your keyboard and direct its output to the track that has the soft-synth.  The 'patch' for the soft synth is selected either by selecting a bank and program in the output portion of the MIDI track or by loading a program (instrument sounds) into the soft-synth.  Which approach depends on how the soft-synth was written.

Now, the audio output from the synth audio track needs to be directed at your audio output (either to your sound card internal-or-external or to a bus that sends to the output device.

There are options that combine all of this functionality into a single track and make a project easier to work with, but I think that while learning it is best to keep the processes seperate.
