Help: Mixer to Interface to Sonar - would this work?
Hi, having posted for the first time a few weeks back I'm now looking for some help before I purchase….. I have a Peavey PV6 mixer (not USB) and want to purchase an interface 2 in 2 out (eg Focusrite 6 or equivalent) to replace my trusted old friend…my (ahem) SoundBlaster Live!, now now, don’t all boo at once, please. I love my mixer, but now have the need to occasionally record at least three instruments simultaneously onto separate tracks: So my plan is to use my Zoom 2.1 USB interface for one (guitar) into Sonar, and the Focusrite (or equivalent) to get the other two inputs. My question is: if I plug bass and keyboard into two of the PV6 inputs, pan one hard left and the other hard right, then take an L and R output from the mixer and put L into channel 1 and R into channel 2 on the interface, will that still allow me to record onto separate tracks when configured in Sonar? as the USB output from the interface can be assigned L & R in Sonar track inputs? Also, and for me I believe a vital requirement, I think the new interface has to have a “mono” function so that the hard panned inputs can be heard in both speakers/headphones when monitoring during recording. If the above is correct (!), I assume this would then allow me to record (potentially) 4 in from the mixer (two instruments mixed on L and two mixed on R) and get two out onto two separate tracks in Sonar using the USB functionality of the interface. I’ve Youtubed to death but cannot see anyone with a similar setup. I looked at the 4 in 4 out Lexicon Omega (as a friend has one) but it gets slated everywhere. It seems everyone only needs 2 out !!! As ever, I welcome your thoughts and advice, and any recommendations on the interface I should buy. Cheers.

It will work, kinda. The problems will occur when trying to use 2 different sound cards at the same time, the Focusrite and the Zoom would both be sound cards. They won't sync up when recording. I suggest getting an interface with more than 2 inputs. Plug everything into the interface and record them on seperate channels in SONAR. The '2 out' everyone is refering to are the speaker outputs, not how many channels they can send to SONAR on the USB cable.

+1 to Greg. You make your life A LOT easier purchasing a soundcard with, say, 4 inputs. It's not that expensive.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Thanks both, I suppose the question now is, which interface? In the "4 simultaneous record" bracket so far I've looked at the Lexicon Omega, Alesis IO4 and the Roland Quad capture which are around my price range, but all seem to have negative reviews/user feedback. I'm now scouring folks signatures then looking up the products, but any recomendations are welcome. Cheers, Kap

Focusrite has been berry, berry good to me. (Saturday Night Live reference). Avoid Alesis and every other device that advertises itself as 'plug and play'. Find any post by Beagle and check out the audio interface recommendations on his web site, link in his signature.
