Hi there James, welcome to the Cakewalk forums.

Do you know what software is on offer, is there anything specific you're thinking about getting?

And what exactly do you mean by 'Play' MIDI - do you need a standalone software synthesizer that you can trigger in real-time with a MIDI keyboard controller?

Or do you want what's called a sequencer, that is used to host softsynths and allows you not only to play and record MIDI in real-time, but also will allow you to program the MIDI details, and have it used to trigger a softsynth?

Do you have a link to the store/website that is offering these discounts?

    Steve

James, you can do all you want to do with all Cakewalk's recording software (except the version of Guitar Tracks that ships with the VS-20).

If you're new to this, it would make sense to buy in at the beginner end of the market.

    There are two candidates:
    • Music Creator 5 - click on THIS LINK for more info
    • SONAR X1 Essentials - here's the LINK
Music Creator 5 is an incredible piece of software for the price, SONAR X1 Essentials is more expensive, but does have a lot more features and 'virtual' instruments.

James, I'm just wondering if you should really do a bit more research before you buy quickly, just to get the 15% discount. It might be better for you long term if you make certain you're getting the right software for your needs.

I used to be a MIDI composer years ago. The rush is not so much a rush as when I went to find software I found the sale.
    Thanks

I see, but it's for products of $99 or more - so that rules out Music Creator.

For the life of me, I can't find the price of SONAR X1 Essentials in US dollars (in the UK here) so I don't know if that qualifies James.

Another thing I meant to say before - it's not an external hardware synthesizer you'll need to 'play' MIDI samples, but a MIDI keyboard controller. Generally speaking, a hardware synthesizer will produce its own audio and will probably be much more expensive. A controller on the other hand is used to trigger the sample in a software synthesizer in your PC.
