Welcome to the forum. Did you also go to Cakewalk support and download and install the update/patch for SHS 6? How about the drivers for your audio interface? Your description makes it seem like you're using a USB microphone. If so, did you download it's drivers or load them from a disk? What is listed under Options>Audio for Playback and Recording Timing Masters? What Drivers are selected? What Driver Mode are you using? Are you selecting the correct input in the tracks?

A USB mic will not work with ASIO drivers. You need to use WDM or MME mode.

[size=3 font="times new roman"]Thanks Greg and Dave. Did you also go to Cakewalk support and download and install the update/patch for SHS 6? I didn’t know there was a download. I looked but didn’t see any. How about the drivers for your audio interface? Yes. Your description makes it seem like you're using a USB microphone. If so, did you download its drivers or load them from a disk? I don’t recall. It’s a Blue Snowball USB mic, I think it's plug-n-play. It's working in other programs, and worked in Sonar prior to the new hard drive. What is listed under Options>Audio for Playback and Recording Timing Masters? Sound Blaster Live Wave Device. What Drivers are selected? Sound Blaster Live Wave Device. What Driver Mode are you using? WDM/KS Are you selecting the correct input in the tracks? I’m not sure. I’m using it the way I used to. Thanks!!!

Find the set-up procedures for the Snowball here: http://www.bluemic.com/snowball/#/support/ For Recording Timing Master, is nothing else there? A USB device should be listed and selectable to use the mic. Maybe it will appear after the set-up. If the mic isn't listed as a valid input, it won't show up in the track as an input.

USB mics are a poor choice. Windows or Sonar treats them as if they are another soundcard and so you can't use ASIO mode because ASIO mode only allows one soundcard to be used at a time. If it doesn't work in WDM mode then you are forced to use MME mode which is not desirable.

Thanks Kev999, Thanks Greg, Okay, according to their website, it is plug and play. Find the set-up procedures for the Snowball here: http://www.bluemic.com/snowball/#/support I looked at it but it only has 2 choices (1) my sound card for input and (2) my sound card or Master Bus. It's set at Master Bus, I selected my sound card but that didn't work. For Recording Timing Master, is nothing else there? Nope, just my sound card. I am lost. Good grief, it worked before I had the new hard drive installed. Thanks, Mickey

Thanks Dave, I changed it to MME and this is what it indicated… The following driver(s) either do not support the current audio format, or are in use by another application. Please choose whether you want to disable them or use them anyway. Then it listed the following… Modem #0 Line Playback Modem #0 Line Record I’m so wore out with trying to figure this out I just X’ed it out and left it alone. Gee Wiz … it used to work before I had the new hard drive installed. Blessings, Mickey

What else changed when you installed the new drive? Did you upgrade the version of Windows? What version are you running? Did you re-install the SoundBlaster drivers? Did you re-install the USB mic drivers.

What else changed when you installed the new drive? Nothing, that I’m aware thus far. Did you upgrade the version of Windows? No What version are you running? Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 service pack 3 Did you re-install the SoundBlaster drivers? I believe the Tech, that serviced my computer, did. Did you re-install the USB mic drivers? It’s plug-n-play. Thanks, Mickey

My old hard drive is slaved to my new one. Both have Sonar on them. I wonder if I should remove Sonar from the old drive. Maybe that’s causing the issue. (Hmm, I’m not sure how to remove Sonar from the slave drive.)

Now I'm really confused.... So you installed a new drive in your computer and never messed with the c: drive, right. So why did you re-install Sonar? Sonar should be installed in the c:\program files folder. I don't recommend installing the Sonar application on any drive except c:. You can put your projects and plug-ins and samples on other drives, but it works best with the application installed in the default folders. Does it work without the microphone installed? USB mics can cause problems as I've stated above. Get Sonar working without the USB mic and then try to get that to work.

Sorry for the confusion ... my new hard drive is C and my old one is slaved as D. Sonar seems to be working, just not with my USB mic, like before. I'm wondering if it has something to do with Sonar also being on the old, slaved drive. Wish there was a way to 'remove the program' from the old drive. Thanks, Mickey

that shouldn't have anything at all to do with it. sonar requires registry entries in windows to tell it where to look for program information, so your latest installation wouldn't be pointing to the D drive for anything for sonar. you will HAVE to get the RECORDING TIMING MASTER to show the USB CODEC for the USB mic or it will not work. period. the USB CODEC is what the USB mic will use if it is "plug and play" with windows. when you plugged the USB mic into the computer the first time after you installed the new operating system on the new hard drive, did windows "install" the new device? if not, it will never work. go to WINDOWS CONTROL PANEL look in the SYSTEM then click on HARDWARE, then click on DEVICE MANAGER. click on SOUND, VIDEO, and GAME CONTROLLERS and open that subfolder. do you see a USB CODEC or USB MICROPHONE or something similar there? if not, the mic has not been installed in windows and if it's not been installed in windows then it won't work in Sonar. if it's not there, turn off the computer, unplug the USB mic. plug it into a DIFFERENT USB PORT - preferably one in the BACK of the computer. turn the computer back on. give windows some time, after a while, after it's thru doing everything - did you see a popup saying it had located and installed drivers for your usb device?

+1 to Beagle. You have to reinstall Sonar so that the registry entries for Windows are updated. I recommend installing it on the c: drive. Don't bother trying to uninstall it from the d: drive since Windows doesn't even know its there, it won't be able to uninstall it automatically.

+1 to what Greg said. also, you didn't answer my question: if it's not there, turn off the computer, unplug the USB mic. plug it into a DIFFERENT USB PORT - preferably one in the BACK of the computer. turn the computer back on. give windows some time, after a while, after it's thru doing everything - did you see a popup saying it had located and installed drivers for your usb device? I know you had it working before, but USB mics are really not good for recording, IMO. they are troublesome at the least.
