Help With Compression Settings

I'm currently still using Guitar Pro 2. I've finished 7 songs but now I'm wondering about the compression I used on mix down. I used the mix down preset, but now wonder if it was too much. Maybe 2.1 or 3.1 would be better. Also there 2 controls I don't understand. I'm not sitting in front of my laptop but I believe one is a THRU GATE the other is COMP THRU. Anyone still using this relic? Can you tell me what these two settings do? Thank You!!

I'm not sure about those settings, and I don't really have a practical answer for you, but if you are questioning whether you have overdone it, you probably have.
When I get the sense that I have overcooked a project, I like to save it as a new version, and drag all the faders down.
Bring everything back up slowly, turn the compressors and other effects on and off. At some point it will probably start to sound a little wonky. Stop, and consider why.
A spectrum analyzer in your master bus can be a great tool here. I like Voxengo SPAN(a free download).
Also, stepping away from the project for a few days can help. Listening with fresh ears will often reveal glaring but overlooked flaws that you missed while you were immersed in the project.

Hi Robert, I ended up not using the preset 5.1 ratio and went with 3.1. I think it opened the sound up and doesn't sound "wonky", a term I quite like. My newest dilemma is that I tried to mixdown to file and I keep getting a pop up box saying mixdown aborted. So frustrating!

Ok, so I tried again but before trying to mixdown, I unplugged the USB Interface and it worked. I don't understand it but I'll take it!
