Help kickstart a big nob

I'm not sure what I think of this. Whatever you point your mouse at on screen, it's controllable with this big smooth knob. On the one hand it kind of looks useful, on the other hand it seems like kind of a waste of time and you'd soon get sick of having to point the mouse at things before using it.
