Help!

I got my cake walk music creator 4 installed at Christmas, and every thing was going fine. After a few recordings suddenly it doesn't work!
I get no play back sound, and it doesn't even show a wave after recording a piece of sound.
Please help!
I'm very computer illiterate.
So please respond like I'm a dummy!

Love to create music for Jesus!

Stop and think, what has changed?

It has to be something, did you add software like Itunes? go to options/audio and check the record and playback deevices, to see if the sound card is listed as the driver.

Change to MME drivers and close and reopen see if recording comes back.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!

A little information will help us: What operating system is you computer running, XP or Vista? How fast is it and how much memory does it have? (It's sometimes on the front of the computer). What sound card are you using? Is it the one that came in the computer or an after-market device? Have you checked all MC's settings to see if anything has changed, like inputs, outputs, recording and playback masters? Have you checked the track properties to confirm that an input and output are selected?
Have you downloaded any updates recently?
Are you sure you're recording audio on an audio track and not a MIDI track?
When you (attempt to) record, can you hear it through the sound card even though it's apparently not recording?

You'll need to disable the onboard sound card if you haven't done so already. 'Control panel>sound and audio devices>hardware', double-click the name of the sound card and choose 'disable'. The path for Vista may be different, but you should find it.
Itunes has released an update which is causing problems for some people, so check if you got it. If so, you may have to uninstall the update.
    Did you check your settings?

The sound card may work for video games (another rant for another day) but that does not mean it is working for MC. Mc needs to have the card setup in it as a playback and recording master timer, under options/audio, it also need to have the drivers setup under the same tabs. until this is done it won't make sound. If it worked before then you had to change something or install something that messed up the drivers. Go thru the setup slowly and see what is not right.

Soundblaster cards are not really what you need for MC...but if it was working before....something changed in the settings to make it stop. It could have been a windows update.

Well, I don't have the internet on my computer so I don't think windows can install an update with out it!
I remember only 2 things that I may have changed since it was working before.
I adjusted my resolution for my screen and had to resize it again.
One time I forgot to register my product and they said that my time ran out and so I had to call and get my new registration # to get it up again but it hasn't been working since then!

control panel>backup & restore center> under the tasks bar on the left side >repair windows using system restore...then Use system restore to fix problems and undo changes to windows...appears under the other 2 options...click it and ...the system restore window pops up..select choose a different restore point...NEXT> then select your restore point on a date it was working OK.....

Windows assure you that even this is undoable if needed....

Vista sure like to hide this feature.... hope it works...

    Hi Jody

Before you start restoring, it's worth checking what you have changed in your registry recently - you might be able to isolate the problem and then just reverse this one action.

To do this in Vista, follow this path: Start > Control Panel > System > System Protection > System Properties > System Protection > System restore > Next and check the Show restore points older than 5 days box.

Have a scroll down the list that appears and let us know all the events listed in the Description column, except entries named System: Scheduled Checkpoint or System: Windows Backup - look especially for anything close to the approximate date your problem began.

Man you wrote more songs than Roger Miller!

I didn't have time to listen to much...just popped in & out. You have some interesting songs there. The vox on a few were kinda strange....sounded hollow and like singing through a megaphone....sure not what I was expecting to hear....

Was that the effect you were shooting for...or not?

Jody...man I thought God was blessing me the night he gave me 2 songs GRACE & I'm Forgiven.... I just remembered...I removed Forgiven & GRACE since they were recorded on my old software and had some of those unintended sound FX in it...I plan to re-record them soon.

You should check out www.soundclick.com it's a free site that many here use...it streams the music and generally always works well.... you can use it to post new tunes for others here to review...It would be much easier to use than your personal site ( which BTW is cool) because there's just so much stuff on your personal site. After a time...you can move the song off the SC site.... and you can post on your personal site as always too.

    Just a thought....

Jody, if it's a registration problem that's preventing you from working with MC, you need to create a new user account in Vista with administrative privileges, never mind that you already have a user account with admin privileges, (it's been awhile since we've seen this problem, I think I'm on the right track). I think you need to load and/or run MC from that new account.
Look in MC 'Options>audio' to see what is listed as the recording and playback timing masters, and what your in/out, buffer and latency and driver mode settings are. If the driver mode is set to MME, we may need to do something else. Let us know.
I mentioned the disabling sound card thing because there are sometimes conflicts when using 2 sound cards. I assume the Audigy is installed inside the computer? Well, the old sound card is actually on a chip in the computer, so disabling the original sound card can reduce the chances of conflict. Disabling a sound card other than the Audigy will not disable the Audigy.

    Hi Jody,
I'd recommend starting over with a clean slate with regard to MC's settings and go from there.

first, make sure MC is CLOSED
find your AUD.INI file and DELETE it. you should be able to find it here: C:/Documents and Settings/[YOUR USER NAME]/Application Data/CakewalkMusic Creator 4/
note that it might be listed simply as "AUD" with no extension.
after you delete that file, start MC4
it will ask you if you want to run the wave profiler. say YES.
it should find and profile both the onboard soundcard AND the soundblaster card.
now go to: OPTIONS>AUDIO>DRIVERS and disable anything that has to do with the onboard soundcard (leave only the SB card enabled)
now go to: OPTIONS>AUDIO>GENERAL and make sure the SB card is enabled for both PLAYBACK and RECORDING TIMING MASTER.

if that doesn't work, let us know and we'll continue from this point. Hope that works!
