Help me with a Leslie sim shootout?

I'm including a short Leslie comparison in an upcoming article, but I'd like to add some additional Leslie plugins that I don't have here. If you have any of the following plugins and would be willing to apply them to a four-second audio clip for me, that would be greatly appreciated.
  • IKM Leslie
  • GG Audio Spin
  • UVI Rotary
  • mda Leslie
  • The stock ones bundled with ProTools or Logic
  • Any others you might have on hand
Sorry, there will be no monetary compensation for helping me with this piece. A shoutout in the article is all I can offer. Unfortunately, I'll need your contribution this week, as the deadline is this weekend.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

    HI Bit,

I have PSP L'Otary and Plug n Mix LS Rotator which I could try for you if that's of interest?

I already have L'otary covered, but not the Plug 'n Mix one. If you'd be willing to throw that one on, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the clip.

Studio One has a plugin called Rotor. Or are you looking for Leslie copies?

My Line 6 POD Farm 2 has two Leslie simulators.
    1. Rotary Drum
    2. Rotary Drum plus horn

I've never used either one so I can't say how they are.  But I've used other POD Farm amp and bass sims and reverb and delay and they are very good.

Guitar Rig 5 also has a Leslie effect called Rotator I can send you that also if you like (and as I already have your source audio file).

Also, there's Audiority Tube Modulator which has a Leslie effect. I have a demo version which might work or you can download it here.. https://www.audiority.com/shop/tube-modulator/

Glad to see so many Leslie fans. I've already done MVintageRotary and L'otary, the only ones I own these days. Zinc Trumpet has provided the Plug 'n Mix offering.

ZT, I have the full GR5 (5.2.2) but don't see a Leslie listed there. Could I be out of date, or was that an optional component? Or maybe I'm just not seeing it - what's it called?

I'd love to add a couple more. The one in Studio One would be a good one that many readers would be able to relate to. I've never heard the Pod Farm one, so naturally I'm curious.

dmbaer: I have sent you the file via email. Thanks for helping - I knew you would, but had forgotten that you recently acquired the IKM Leslie.

Hey Bit, I recently picked up GG Audio Spin, but can't say I'm much of an expert on rotary sounds.  I can help out by running the file through some presets or something, but this thing has a lot of options. (I got it bundled with the Organ they have, which was more of a priority for me than a Leslie.)

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

Spin is definitely one of the plugins I wanted to include. Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send you the raw file. No need to be a Leslie expert. Just experiment a little until you get a sound that's pleasing to your ear.

Ironically, when I Googled this before, those were the only two that got mentioned in many posts.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

I've been tempted every time MRotary comes up on the 50% off list, but it seemed redundant with the great Leslie sims I've already got, including MVintageRotary.

Then again, it might be cool to try a glass speaker cabinet. I think I'll leave it out of this particular demonstration, though, because it's not specifically a Leslie emulator.

Re: Help me with a Leslie sim shootout? 2018/10/26 15:03:03 (permalink)
You'll notice that none of these Leslie sims mention the name "Leslie" at all. That's a trademarked brand name owned by Suzuki. Hence the imaginative allegories such as "Spin" and "Rotor".

Properly simulating the rotary speaker electronically or digitally has proven to be elusive. It is an acoustical effect, meaning it happens in air. Just putting a microphone on a real Leslie gives you an entirely different experience than hearing a Leslie interact with the room with your own ears.

I have a hardware unit called the Ventilator that does a very good job, but you'd never confuse it with the sound of a real Leslie. Likewise for the pretty good Leslie that's built in to VB3, or the very nice-sounding MVintageRotary.

Correct.  It's called "The Leslie Collection" ("Collection" because it's one plug-in but that has six models on tap).

I've just dug out the MDA Leslie and reinstalled it. The DLL file's datestamp is 2002 and I don't think that it has ever been updated. Anyway I tried it but the GUI would not display properly and I was not able to change any of the parameters from the default settings.
