Hi, Peter. Love the video. tells the story much better than typing words on a screen.

I'm not an expert on Bass or amplifiers. I'm mainly a MIDI/keyboard kinda guy. But I think what might help since you are plugging the bass directly into the EMU1820, would be an amp simulator.

I've heard several folks like these:

Voxengo has Boogex for free, it's got a great cab sim section. What you may want to do is use that with some EQ cuts to get the sound you're looking for.

    Ain't technology wonderful?
The bass sounded okay here, but I'm sure your hearing is much better than mine.
You can try cutting out some of the notes from the bass line, which may keep it from getting muddy.

I hate to say it, but you really get what you pay for when it comes to Amp Sim plugins. Products from IK Multimedia (Amplitube 2, Ampeg 2 - Bass plugins), and Native Instruments (Guitar Rig and Bass Products), are unbielevably expensive ($300-400.00), however, are incredibly realistic, because they've actually researched and matched the tones of some of the most poular amp and cabinet models available. There are free one's available, but if your looking for quality, you're really not going to see it unless you fork over the dough for it.

It really stinks, but you're hardpressed to find a free or inexpensive amp mod plugin that puts out the quality that the above constains. Believe me, I've searched and I've tried :(

I'm going to have to disagree with you a little on this one, Bryant. For guitar, I agree totally. Bass is a different animal.

Most of the problems that you'll encounter while recording and mixing bass is not the actual tone quality of the instrument, but instead it's more of the competing frequencies that muddy your mix. In the part of the song you posted, the kick drum sounded very bassy. You could roll of the low end of your bass track to compensate, or the kick, but something has to go.

As for tone, really the amp sim section won't be as important as the cab sim IMO. That's why I recommended Boogex (from voxengo.com, free). It's cab section is very impressive. I don't like the tone of the amp for guitars, but it does work well at low drive levels for bass.

I have the revalver (old version, not the pretty newer one) and it's ok, but it lacks. I used it on the solo bozak did on Cakewalk Blues (plug plug) and was happy with the results, but for heavy rythym parts I haven't found a sim setting that I'm happy with yet - but this is way OT.....

The bass is such a dynamic instrument - hard to control IMO - the ideal sound for me would be the Fleetwood Mac sound from something like Rumours. I'll download the Boogex and try it out, normally I use camelPhat plug in and the results are sorta-ok.

Peter Sutton - I agree with Rodney and Greg on cutting something, either it be notes from the bassline or kick from the drumline, using EQ in conjunction would also help to clarify the section more. I think though that the section is being played the way you are intending it to sound, yes?, there's a song by a band named Fugazi, it's called 'Repeater'...I think a bass sound close to that one would sit in the mix nicely for what you're trying to get. Mids cut pretty hard with a bottom end that seems to roll off and not carry alot of boom, the highs just enough to cut through the mix and give the sense of movement.

Not sure that a cab sim for guitar will do much for this, and, as wickerman said, bass is a very dynamic instrument. I think what needs done here is to carve out a space in the eq field for the bass.... the trill notes are actually higher up on the neck compared to an open "e" or "a", so maybe rolling back the lower range, adding boost in the mid and upper mid range, and a little boost in the higher range. When I get home this evening I will put some numbers up, a young fella like yourself probably doesn't realize how frustrating the memory loss of old age can be, I know what I want to show you, can't remember the details enough to say it. Although we are working with the bass, it is not all low end frequencies, there is a lot going on in the mids and highs, hence the "dynamic" label. I do have a pair of bass plug ins, free, that may also help, but with the proper eq and then compression/limiting, this should be fixable.
