Help mixing using hardware effects.

I am a song writer with a small home studio and I am new to this board. I would like to be able to use my UA 6167 and Ensoniq DP/2 as effects on mix down. I understand that I can record the playback in sonar and in real time using a bus. I have a Motu 828 mkII, would it be wrong or harmful to connect the outputs 1&2 to inputs 1&2 and make a send from master to a new track using stereo input 1 on that track?
 
 I have tried this.
 
 From master I sent to a new track and assigned stereo input 1 which should be 1&2 inputs on my Motu 828mkII. When I arm the new track selecting stereo input 1  I'm only getting the right side to hit the meter. I do have effects plugged into 1 and 2 and I think the signal is going through one of my effects. Perhaps I could use a patch bay.
