Help needed to source a Texas Instruments Firewire Chipset

Hi guys,

I have a mobile recording rig with 2 x Yamaha i88x Firewire units and a Lenovo SL500 laptop, 2GB Ram, SOnar 8.5, and USB HDD.

It's all great and can do 32 tracks at 48/24 with no problems, except for minuscule dropouts across all recording tracks (a few frames every 10 minutes or so) which is OK for live stuff, but makes the setup useless for location recording of albums etc. I have been told that the only chipset worth getting for firewire is a Texas Instruments set. However, even the local Lenovo agents can't seem to help me with an upgrade as TI does not apparently supply to South Africa (I find that hard to believe, frankly).

Anyone here have any suggestions? I have tested buffers, switched off all the connectivity etc etc - only thing left is to find the chipset. Been at it for many months and it's about as good as it will ever be given the current hardware, it seems.

Your input will be much appreciated.

HERE is a SIIG express card that lists a T.I. chipset.  Will this work in your Laptop?  If it will you should be able to get one either in SA or import in from some other location.

Hi Fireberd, thanks for that. I suppose it will work - the laptop has all the usual ports and slots. Will check it out! Thanks,

    Ludwig
