Help on Chorus Effect
I only have 5 singers and I want to make it sound like a lot of people singing. Something like a whole choir singing with just 5 tracks of vocals. Is the chorus fx the way to go? Also what settings would be recommended?

Have the singers do 3 or 4 "takes" and be sure the takes are on different tracks. They will sound HUGE like a choir when it's played back. Send to a buss with short reverb. No pitch correction. If it's not possible to get a number of takes you can clone each track 2 times for a total of 3 copies each and nudge one forward and one backward by a different amount..... repeat that with all the tracks. Use a buss and send the tracks to a buss and place a short reverb in the buss. Do not try to pitch correct any of the tracks. Either of these methods are better than using a chorus effect to try to fake it.

Thanks for the reply! Questions: 1. When do you use chorus fx? 2. Is EQing clones differently a bad idea to create a choir effect? 3. What about panning?

sharpdion23 Thanks for the reply! Questions: 1. When do you use chorus fx? 2. Is EQing clones differently a bad idea to create a choir effect? 3. What about panning? 2 - EQ'ing the clones differently is an excellent way to make it sound like a different group of singers 3 - Panning them differently is also a good ploy, just make sure that the entire ensemble only takes up as much width as you really need in the production. Using Channel Tools on a bus is a great way to narrow/pace the stereo field

Sometimes you can ask the 5 singers to sing harmonies as overdubs. That can get you up to 15 tracks real fast. best regards, mike

answers: 1. Only on guitars (sparingly) 2. Sure you can do that.... but I don't. 3. Most definitely. With 15 voices, yeah... put a few out at 100% and spread the rest between 10% to about 80% with the majority being in the 40% area. Just be sure it's relatively balanced. You want about 7 on one side and 7 on the other. I would match each one up to one on the opposite side for balance. A short low level dark reverb will help to blend the voices together and make it sound pretty big. Keep the reverb levels as low as you can and still get the blend. It takes the edge off.

in the cakewalk audio FX (default with the cake DAW's) select the Studioverb 2.... look for the DARK PLATE reverb....and insert it. It will come in at 50% ....simply dial it way back down to 8% or so... then flavor to taste, You can also play with the room size setting and some of the other stuff...I generally just back down the level to what sounds good. Save it as a new named preset for future use.

I don't remember who it was but a member here recorded a song and he wanted the beginning to sound like a huge venue full of fans. He took like 15 of his friends, supplied the beer and recorded them as if in a bar situation. They started to cheer as the band took the stage. He recorded this like 20 times over, all different. It sounded like 1000 people hanging out and then the distant cheers built up to a roaring chant and the song kicked in. Sounded awesome and real. So I guess this is a +1 to Herb or Mikes suggestions. Damn.... that's one long +1 Mike

How do I get a short low level dark reverb? If you route all of your vocal tracks to a vocal bus, and pan them similar to how Guitarhacker outlined above, you'll get a stereo spread yes? IF you decide, for example that the spread is too wide in your project, rather than go back and adjust each individual singers' pan setting, use Channel Tools on the vocal bus to narrow it.
