Help to eliminate 'pop' at end of split clips? SOLVED!
I am running X1 Producer and am experiencing a low volume, but audible and unacceptable 'pop' at the end of some audio clips that I have split. It does not happen all the time, maybe 30% of the time, but I cannot pin point anything consistent to point me towards a solution. It occurs to both the original clip that I have clipped and to any copies of the clip I have made. These are very basic audio tracks without any plugins or any processing. This process is obviously used many, many times while editing and renders the track unusable, so I must be doing something wrong. I feel dumb even asking, but...I am stuck... Any ideas? Thanks, Nick

Are you setting your snap value to 1 Sample and snap to Zero crossing point for audio?

I have to admit, I am not sure what those settings are. I cannot seem to find anything in Preferences that looks like 'snap value,' but I do see a snap to zero crossing point box, which was unchecked. Checking it made no difference, though. Could you clarify a little more for a rookie?

Splitting audio at a zero-crossings does not guaranty you won't get a click/pop, especially if you do so in an area of high-amplitude. The rate of change in the signal amplitude can still be high enough that stopping it at zero has nearly the same effect as dropping instantaneously to zero. You will need to apply short clip fade-outs, either manually by zooming in and dragging the clip fade handle, or using Clip > Fade Clips in the track view menu. Something on the order of 4-6ms will usually do the trick. EDIT: Slow In and Fast out will give you the smoothest transitions.

Not sure if this will help, but... I find it much easier to work with audio clips in Audacity. I zoom right in and fade out a *tiny* amount of the signal (at end and/or start of audio). I don't find Sonar easy to 'edit' audio files, but I'm sure there are ways I have no idea about!! Good luck.

Or set up auto crossfades. @brundlefly - I will give Slow In / Fast Out a try. I've been using Fast In/Fast Out. I would really like to type in a time value for crossfades. Another daw I have used has that feature - loved that part.

I would swear doing a quick fade-out was the first thing I tried...that the pop didn't seem to part of the actual audio in the clip...BUT...I just tried again and even a super short fade did the trick. Awfully cumbersome and seemingly unnecessary, but it looks like it will allow me to salvage what I have. I might look into this Audacity and see if that is, in fact, an easier way to edit... Thank you so much for the help so far! If anyone knows of a more automatic way to split clips without this popping so that I don't have to edit numerous clips, please give me a heads up...!

I have used Audacity for years to convert exported Sonar files to MP3 with occasional FX (compress, amplify, fade out, etc.) within Audacity. Just the other night I noticed a clipped signal at the very beginning of the file in Audacity and decided I would try to edit it out with the pencil tool. The problem I had was that it required you to zoom in too far before I could actually edit the signal. Its easy to lose your place as you zoom way in. I ended up deleting that tiny section. Had I bounced to a stereo track within Sonar I would have been able to remove the spike much easier IMO. More on topic, auto crossfades have been very helpful for me when doing splits and I tend to split quite a lot.

Riverboy If anyone knows of a more automatic way to split clips without this popping so that I don't have to edit numerous clips, please give me a heads up...! I guess it all depends on the reason why you're splitting clips in the first place. If your intention is to split them up in order to apply clip based Fx, i.e. leaving the relative positions of the split clips intact then you should be free of clicks/pops. If the intention is to copy & paste or move the split clips elsewhere in your project then you're going to need to play around with crossfading/clip fades etc. Even track volume automation might be your saviour in this scenario.

And try to split where the level is low - less than -40dB or so.

There is a command in the process menu (forget the name) that you can set up to fade selected clips at very short durations. Just select all your clips and apply it. done.

Yes, that is what I suggested in post #4. Clips > Fade Clips in the TV menu.

PROBLEM SOLVED! timidi was almost right. while looking into all the other valuable comments and going through help, I discovered that in the clips drop-down menu in the track view there is a 'fade clips...' selection. This brings up an awesome dialogue box with millisecond settings for fade-out AND fade-ins. I set these to a quick 5ms fade-out, select all clips and...boom! Once set, these settings stick for the project, which is awesome if you are applying this to individual clips (but I am fine with a universal fade-out of 5ms). In addition, this dialogue box has other cool features that I was not aware of such as 'fill in gaps between clips/xfades' which is HUGE for me, alter curve types and check boxes for applying time and curve changes to existing if desired. SPECTACULAR! Thanks SO much everyone...woo hoo!!!
