Help with MOTU midi interface
Hi,
I recently purchased a Motu micro lite 5x5 midi interface. When I power on, sometimes the interface is not recognized and sometimes it is. Emailed MOTU, no response. Anybody have any ideas why? one thing to note is that it only happens sometimes during a power on and not during a restart. also, one thing to note is that my PC for some reason keeps power to the USB port ON even when the PC is off. my system config is in my signature. Thanks in advance!

I have a MOTU Traveller - not sure how much parity in the two products .... but from a order of operations standpoint - I must turn the MOTU FIRST before even powering up the laptop - then I have have to launch the Firewire interface software to 'remind' the Traveller how it should be configured - it wakes up every time and Sonar works fine - finds all of the Audio and MIDI I/O .... I think it's a Mac thing.... (just kidding don't flame me Steve J)

yes, if i unplug then plug in the motu it works fine. but thats kind of a hassle. thanks for you input.

I have the same interface and the same symptoms. Whenever it isn't showing up I just unplug the cord going into the MOTU and replug it. Mine also stays on when the computer is powered off too. Not sure why any of this happens.

I have the opposite problem----always recognised on startup----but occasionally(not always though) lost on restarts. I have checked the MOTU site and Unicornation and the unplug/plug procedure seems to be the best remedy anyone can come up with.

I used to have this problem with my microlite... exactly this problem as a matter of fact.
Unplugging it and plugging it back in is a pain. Don't settle for that...
For me, it turned out that the USB bus was underpowering that microlite. A powered USB hub did the trick on that machine, and its now on a different machine that doesn't require the powered USB hub.
On a separate but somewhat related note, I also noticed that the microlite is picky about what other USB devices it shares buses with. For example, it stopped working "out of the blue" one time, after working successfully for months. I thought that it was the original problem again (same symptoms), but it turned out that the addition of a new mouse and its associated drivers interfered with the microlite. The solution was either to remove the mouse, or remove its proprietary drivers... I removed the mouse (since it was one of those extra button mice that didn't do anythig special without the proprietary drivers).
Hopefully, one of these two is your problem (underpowered usb or driver incompatibility).
Since the time of these issues, around a year ago, I've had NO issues with the microlite. It works very well.

I have an 8X8 MOTU MIDI interface, and I had to unplug/replug it as often as not when starting my computer...and I did in fact switch it to a USB hub that has its own power source a few weeks back (for unrelated reasons), and it hasn't happened since.

It seems that the power output from different usb chipsets can vary quite a bit as well.
I now have my microlite hooked to a Dell 9300, and I'm not using a hub... works great... never have to restart it, and I have WAY more USB wires hanging off it than I did with the desktop that gave me so much trouble (MSI NEO board).
Ah well...
As much as I hate wall warts, it would be good if usb interface manufacturers realized that power is not a constant and included an option (like most Firewire "bus powered" devices seem to).

interesting....i have an MSI Neo2 board. anyway the powered hub did not work for me so i returned the unit. oh well....getting an edirol UM880...should be here in a couple days.
