Help with Midi

I'm an idiot when it comes to a lot of things, and Midi is one of them (Don't worry, I wont bore you all with the other ones).  For the past 10-12 years I have had my MPC2000XL and a record player.  I would sample from old records and call it good.  I went out and bought a cheap Midi Keyboard way back in the day too, but never got it working.  It was like foreign language, it was tough, i was in college, I had other things to do, you understand.  So, It sat in my closet for the past decade.  Well, I've recently pulled the thing out and considered taking it to Antiques Roadshow but they're not in town for a another few months so figured I would make sure that it works beforehand.  So I come to seek advice of you fine ladies and gentleman.  Keep in mind, I am also new to Sonar, although I have used Garage band in the past so I'm not completely lost.

The keyboard is a MidiMan USB KeyStation 49 Midi Controller, and I'm told it is the great grandfather of M-Audio.  I downloaded a driver, computer recognized it, I watched some Videos on Youtube (So you can see where I am at in the learning process, this video was the most helpful: )

Not that I have the keyboard producing sounds, what I am experiencing is a sound almost as if the volume is up way too high and there is a delay or reverb going on. Basically every instrument i try to use sounds extremely distorted with reverb.  I do not see that I have any FX hooked up, and when I start a whole new project it does the same thing.  I'm thinking it could be a setting on the keyboard, but I have tried to go through and change the reverb depth, velocity, chorus depth, etc, but no luck.

Anyone have an idea what it could be? Could it be something with my sound card?  Or something with a setting in Sonar?

Thanks in advance

    Did you see this video?

What you have is a controller designed to play a Midi instrument. The keyboard doesn't produce sound it produces MIDI data which is best described as a set of instructions for instruments and equipment that understands MIDI. Have a look at the video I have linked then if you have any questions post up and I and I'm sure others will help.

The delay you are experiencing is probably latency. Lower your audio interface's buffers in preferences. That should help.

Thank you for your reply.  That was extremely helpful with getting me to understand how to use different sound banks.  I appreciate how you walked through the hard way to set up the ins and outs as well.  Definitely my style of learning.  I subscribed to your channel and will be going through more of your videos as issues arise.

You are correct in assuming I have Latency, but the issue described in the OP is actually different than Latency.  After watching your video, I followed the steps, was able to get everything set up properly and able to hear, for example, piano.  The piano sounded really nice and I was excited to work with it, however, about 2 minutes into really just playing with the keys, the sound all of a sudden became extremely distorted.  I hadn't messed with any reverb or EQ of any sort.  I shut down the session, opened up a new project, and same thing.  Interestingly - When I change the output to "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth"  The sound of that seems to be fine.  When I go back to the TTS, still distorted.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your expertise.

I would start by disabling the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" that's done in preferences--->MIDI devices. However the fact it is an option has rung an alarm bell.

What driver mode are you using? (Prefs--->Audio--->Playback & Recording).

You should be in either ASIO or WDM mode. I'd start with ASIO and see if that improves the situation. If not try WDM. Some devices work better in one mode than the other. ASIO should be first choice but for example WDM is better for my laptop setup where I use a Roland Tri-capture.

I suspect if you change your drive mode your problems will disappear.

    Karl,
Have to say man, you helped a lot.  I had moved the driver to WMD, and I too am on a Laptop (Dell Latitude Core i5 vPro)  It's a whole new world now taht I have MiDi hooked up and can just grove with different sounds.  I don't know how I went so long without it.

I would consider this a case closed for now.  I will let you know if the problem comes back, but thank you for your expert feedback.

I had another question, (should I start a new thread?)

Now that I have the Midi Keyboard hooked up, is there a way to change the output via the keyboard as opposed to going into the software and clicking the drop down?  Right now I have a drum sample going on track 1, and on track 2 I have the keyboard hooked up to Cakewalk Sound Center.  I'd like to scroll through the different sound patches to find the one I like, but its pretty annoying to keep clicking through with my mouse....is there a better way to do this that I should be researching or might it depend upon keyboard functionality?

    Thanks again.

It is possible to step through softsynth patches from an external surface but probably leans more toward keyboard capability. I've not used ACT for it but it might be possible using that if all else fails.

First thing I'd check is that your keyboard controller has some way of sending patch changes which it should do. You need to send a patch change to the softsynth and it should respond. IIRC that's just a matter of having the synth track as the in focus one and sending the change. I can't recall doing anything special to set it up. I'll have to check when I get back in the studio.

I'm not sure it will help, but there are keybindings you could try.  In Global Bindings, look for Increment Plugin Preset and Decrement Plugin Preset.  I've got mine set to Num* and Num/.  Sometimes they work ... sometimes they don't.  It kind of depends on the plugin.
