Help with Soft Synths

I use many many instances of Kontakt 5 in most of my compositions. So for instance If I want a violin, I go to Insert - Soft Synth - Kontakt 5 16 out(i don't know why I choose that over 8 out or just "kontakt 5", so if anyone knows the difference i'd like to know that too =D Thanks!) and then I hit record, lay down some Midi with my controller, and then usually Freeze it. Then if i want a cello, i rine and repeat with a new soft synthe instance of Kontakt. So my question is, I've heard talk of somehow using Channels? Is there a way to only have to load on instance of Kontakt, and then use midi channels to just record multiple tracks from one soft synth? My computer is good enough that I haven't had problems yet, but I fear that after an entire orchestra piece is completed, I may crash from all the open Kontakts.
 
Any advice is welcomed! Thanks!
 
 
P.S. - I'm using Sonar 8.5 Producer, with WIndows 7 64Bit.

    Sorry I am not a Kontakt user, but some soft synths are multi channel and all you do is open it once and assign a channel for each instrument. Insert a track assign it to the synth, pick the channel , select the patch and record. The TTS-1 is like that. It does 16 channels. Just go to the track properties and see if more channels are available. It would seem it does if it has 16 outputs. The only reason you choose all 16 outputs is if you plan on freezing and you want each instrument separate. There is no need for one instrument to use 16 outputs. It is sort of like busses.

    Welcome to the forum!

    IIRC that function is explained in the Kontakt manual.
    It's quite simple actually: The instrument that is set to MIDI channel one in Kontakt plays together with the MIDI track that is using the same channel.

    SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

    Yes, you can load multiple instruments into a single Kontakt instance. You can drive each one from its own MIDI track, and you can either route each instrument to its own Kontakt output channel or combine them into a single output.

    This is much more convenient for composing. However, you also use a lot more RAM and lose the ability to freeze each instrument individually.

    "Channels" can refer to input channels or output channels. If you were to combine all your string instruments into one Kontakt instance, you'd probably assign each one its own MIDI (input) channel so that they can be driven by separate MIDI tracks. However, all the string section instruments' outputs might be combined into a single output channel for mixing convenience.



    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
